Invite grammar help!

Chip, on August 3, 2017 at 1:07 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 17

Hey all, I got my invites on sale on Minted and just got proofs.

I love them but there's a hangup on wording I'm hoping you can help with!

The way they originally had it was

"Please join us for the wedding of Chip & EL" But I really wanted to add "Together with their parents" since they're helping us.

So - which do I use?

It defaulted to "Together with THEIR parents, Please join US for the wedding of Chip & EL" but THEIR and US isn't correct

But would it be more correct to say "Together with OUR parents, please join US for the wedding of Chip & EL" because that sounds funny to me out loud

Or "Together with THEIR parents, please join THEM for the wedding of Chip & EL" - but that doesn't sound right either

    We did:

"Together with their parents, Kim & Greg invite you to celebrate their marriage"

ETA: Didn't see the part about it defaulting. Sorry!

@Kate I know that's the proper way to do it, but the layout doesn't allow.

Or should I just omit the first line and leave it as it is?

If you're working with a physical person at Minted, they should be able to add a line and make that happen for you.

FML - how would you do that with my invite layout?

I'm using Minted as well- they were able to completely repurpose an RSVP card to a save the date so it would match my invite suite. If you ask for a designer review they will probably be able to move your design around to accommodate 2 lines of text above "wedding" while keeping it under the string light design detail.

I got my invites through minted. They were able to totally change the wording layout on my invite and still have it work with the design. You could always ask them. I would say "this is the wording I prefer, what do you suggest?"

If not I think you suggestion of "together with our parents..." would be better.

I think you got great advice from PPs re: contacting the designer to add another line. Whatever you decide, do NOT mix possessive pronouns (don't use both we/us and their, for example).

It's a clunky sentence, but "Together with our parents, we do thus-and-so" is grammatically correct.

How about the traditional Mr. and Mrs. Leland Smith request the honour of your presence at the marriage of their daughter Miss Fluffy Sue to Mr. John Jones son of Dr. and Mrs. Harry Swenson?

@Nancy if it's a religious ceremony in a house of worship, then yes. If it's a secular ceremony or religious ceremony held elsewhere, then "honour of your presence" isn't used.

That is interesting. I love the British spelling. So much more formal and adds a touch of class.

    Nancy, Emily Post:

ETA: This was in response to Nancy's pre-edited post that asked if the "honour" usage was in an etiquette book

Funny, I've never seen the distinction in an etiquette book. I'll have to check again! I reedited the comment. I reread it and it didn't seem to "flow" correctly.

I understand what you are wanting but with your layout I don't see a place for it. I also ordered ours from minted and they were able to reformat our RSVPs the way we wanted. I would contact them.

We also put "Together with our families X and X request your presence at their wedding".
