Invite address after a death in family

Sherry, on February 21, 2018 at 12:37 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 12
Hi everyone, I am getting married in September, my FH and I have pretty much everything ready including the invites being addressed and ready to mail, my uncle passed away yesterday, my question is, do I readdress the envelope with just my Aunts name or do I leave it as is with both their names? Thank you.

I am so sorry for your loss! I would address it to "Mrs John Smith". It's what I did for my grandmother after my grandfather died. I wanted her to know that I always thought about him, without being dark.

I would readdress and offer her a plus one. It might be helpful for her to have a friend with her since it is still new. Sorry for your loss, OP!

^^ETA I think muriel's suggestion of waiting to offer the plus one until closer to the wedding is a better one.

I’m so sorry for your loss. Your invites shouldn’t go out until June so I would definitely take your uncle’s name off the invitation.

I agree that by the time these are mailed it might be hurtful to see his name on the envelope. I would read dress it. As far as a plus one- reach out to your aunt when you're ready to mail invites and explain that you want her to enjoy her time and is there a friend she might want to bring along for company. Sorry for your loss Smiley sad

Re-do the envelope. It would be heartless and insensitive to leave his name. You can't invite dead people to your wedding. She knows that you would have included him were he still alive.

Right now your priority would be reaching out to her with your condolences. I would not be mailing your wedding invitation yet, especially to her.

Rather than indicate a plus one, I would wait until closer to the wedding and mention in person that she is welcome to bring a friend. Again, it would be horribly insensitive to suggest that right now.

My grandmother-in-law lost her brother, who I had sent STD's to him and his wife, a few weeks before our invites went out. I texted her and asked her what she thought would be most appropriate based on her sister-in-law's personality and whatnot, since I didn't know her very well.

She told me to address the invite to just her and there was no issue. I also included him in our memorial lantern I made, which their whole family was touched by.

    Sorry for your loss.

You should re-address the envelope, especially as it’s a long time before you should be sending them out anyway. Since it’s a few months from now, by that time the name on the invite may bring up a wave of emotions, and not in a good way.

We lost an aunt the week we were dropping save the dates in the mail. Obviously we pulled her name off the envelope, but we also held the rest of the family’s STDs back for a couple weeks to give some time for mourning before we threw our happy event in their faces. I was super relieved we hadn’t put the one with her name on it in the mail yet, I know the family member that opened it would’ve felt very sad to see it

Thank you everyone. I will do as you have all suggested and readdress the envelope. Thanks again for the help, and condolences.
