They don't have to but I always think it's a nice touch!

I agree that it doesn't have to, but it can help key guests into the wedding colors and overall feel of the wedding. You typically don't list dress code on an invitation unless it's black tie, but the formality of the invitation (as well as the location name) will help your guests determine how nicely they have to dress. A somewhat formal invite with a lot of color that doesn't use inner envelopes or physical RSVPs paired with a hotel ballroom venue might indicate that cocktail attire is appropriate, while an invite featuring burlap, wood, and wildflowers paired with a barn venue might indicate that sundresses and khakis would be good.

I think it's more about the vibe of the wedding/invites.

We are having a casual but classy wedding in a rustic venue so we hope to get invitations that will represent that.

My wedding invitations didn’t match my wedding colors. We included photos from our engagement shoot on our invitations and they had a different color scheme and vibe from the wedding itself.

Mine did...but I think as long as it gives a preview of the feel of the wedding, it doesn't have to match or be theme-y. You probably want to stick with something formal or simple for a formal event and something more laid back for a more casual event, but even then I'd say just do you guys. I only mentioned the above because I think it let's your guests have an insight into the event

Mine matched color wise. They also had a beach kind of scene on them (having a beach wedding), so I felt they went together well. As for dress code...I put casual on the wedding website which I don’t think anyone is looking at. I can’t wait to see the varying states of dressy to super casual that show up!

I would say no they don't have to match. Our invitations were ivory which I guess matches the linens but that was not done on purpose, I just don't like stark white invitations. The type is slate grey which matches nothing but our names were purple which is our primary wedding color

Mine matched because I purchased a Stamper and Pigment Ink to use on the Invitations. # Diypower!

I like matching invites to the theme, I think it gives your guests a good idea of what to expect to see on your wedding day!

It doesn't have to but it would be nice to have sort of a theme with all the details for your wedding. I do know, however, that the invite sets the mood for the type of wedding itll be. The fancier the invitation, the fancier the attire is and expectation of a reception.
