Dedicated June 2021

Invitations

We are getting married in June 2021 with a destination wedding (in the US but most likely requiring a two hour plane ride for most guests). It will be a smaller wedding (30ish people). We do NOT want to send save the dates. When do we send invitations? Most of our guests are already “saving the date” via word of mouth.

I would send invitations around 3-4 months in advance for a destination wedding. I know etiquette usually says 2-3 months but with Covid still being a thing I would send out a little early.

I would still send them out in the same 2-3 month time frame. If they know the date via word of mouth, then they can already start saving. If you read through these forums, you'll see that the farther out brides send invites, the harder it is for them to get their RSVPs back. When it's too far out, people throw the invite somewhere and forget about it.

I agree with Yasmine, I would send them out 3-4 months ahead of time for a destination wedding.

Agree with the others- since it’s a destination wedding I think that 3-4 month timeframe is good.

We are also having a destination wedding within the U.S. We are sending out STDs a year prior so everyone has ample notice and because there are soooooo many weddings (and vacations, events, etc.) being rescheduling for 2021- we wanted to make sure everyone had us on the books first! Then we will be sending our invites 4 mos prior to our date, with RSVPs due 60 days before the wedding. Our venue needs final headcount & payment 30 days out, so we wanted ample time to track down those that haven’t RSVP’ed by the deadline, and have some wiggle room in case anyone changes their minds, etc.

Until the recent invention of save the dates, people who wanted to give others advance info told them in person or on the phone, or sent them an e mail or letter. All still work fine.

Since you are having a destination wedding, you want to to send them out earlier than normal, and considering the pandemic, you might want to send them out even earlier than that. They say that in ordinary circumstances you should send invitations 6-8 prior to the wedding, but that's also including save the dates, which you are aren't doing. Like the others in this thread, I would recommend sending them out 3-4 months in advance. Save the dates are sent 6-12 months prior. Invites are always sent out 6-8 weeks prior. You just have to be more diligent with collecting replies and such for a destination wedding but the time frame is the same.
