Invitations - Nontraditional

Shannon, on June 16, 2019 at 9:11 AM Posted in Planning 0 10
Disclaimer: I’m NOT asking if I should or shouldn’t do this or if it’s in good etiquette. I am asking if anyone has done this and how it worked for you. Adam and I are not very traditional people. Our friends are an eclectic bunch of not very traditional people. Nobody would be at all offended by this. Has anyone gone without paper invitations at all? I don’t see the point in wasting paper or stamps (aka...money) for invitations. Has anyone use evites and online RSVPs? How did it work for you?

We had friends who did this a few years back. For their crowd it didn’t work out. They invited 110 people and only the wedding party (8 people plus their dates) RSVP’d. They ended up having to reach out to the other 94 guests after their RSVP date and most people said they figured an invite would be coming in the mail.

I can see that being a logical problem with a bigger wedding. FH said last night that we should top out at 75. I’m not sure we know 75 people we’d actually want there. I’m thinking more like 50.

Yes!! We are doing online invitations & RSVP! All the weddings & any other important parties (birthdays, anniversaries, gala openings etc) that we’ve been to in the last years did the same & none of them had an issue with guests not RSVP-ing.
Yes, this is definitely know your crowd thing. For us, all our guests are very computer savvy & for them, mailing a physical RSVP would actually be more difficult lol. I personally, as a guest, always prefer online invite & I really dislike the paper / transportation waste for something that in 90% of cases will end up in trash.
In addition, we wanted a very specific invitation design that we couldn’t find anywhere online, so I designed our invites myself with a help of my graphic designer friend.
I also prefer online option because it brings all the guests to our wedding website, which looks really great & has all important wedding info that would otherwise be more difficult to communicate to the guests. Online RSVPs also keep everything nicely organized in one place, including guests main course choices etc. so you don’t need to manually track it, which in my opinion is a waste of time lol.
So for us, for all those reasons, online invites & RSVPs were the only logical & acceptable choice!

My friend did it and had a great turn out she had a wedding website and a Facebook group that kept everyone informed. I also think she reached out to everyone by phone as well just because she planned her wedding in 3 months!

Thanks. I think this is a no-brainer for us. It just makes sense. I just wanted to make sure it wouldn't be a disaster.

If intution tells you they're a different crowd and would do it, then of course I think you should save paper and money! It seems like you have a great idea!

Yeah! I think as long as you know you’ll most likely have to reach out to a lot of people you’ll be fine but it’s not like your having 200+ so it’s not that bad. But even people that send actual invites still have to reach out to many guests so it doesn’t matter either way lol

I have a friend who did this and it worked out pretty well. If you have some older guests I would maybe mail the invitation to them, but people on the younger side would be fine with evites—maybe even prefer them
