Invitation wording with divorced parents

Stephanie, on January 15, 2021 at 7:26 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 10

First time posting but could use some advice here. My parents got divorced when I was younger and it was messy - they still can't say more than hello to each other without someone getting pissed. My dad is happily remarried and he and my stepmom are paying for vast majority of our wedding. They want a super formal wedding invitation that says something along the lines of:

Mr. & Mrs. Last Name

along with Ms. Mom'sLastName

request the honor of your presence at the wedding of their daughter....

You get the point. BUT, that's so not the vibe of our wedding. Our ceremony is outdoors overlooking the mountains in Vermont and our reception is in a barn. Our invitation has a vintage travel poster style and feel to it. I'm not sure the best way to write the wording so that it works with our vibe but doesn't offend my dad & stepmom (they really want people to know their hosting). Suggestions please!!!

Is your mom contributing to the wedding at all?

Yes, in more minor ways (because she's hosting the bridal shower), for the wedding she's covering the flowers, dessert table, and my attire.

"Together with their families" might work?

Thanks! I like that too but wasn't sure if it sounded like we were the ones hosting? I guess its sort of us and our families based on that wording.

Hi Stephanie, I like your thoughts around this. For our wedding, my parents paid a big chuck of the bill and my husband’s parents are divorced. We did “Together with their families” route and I asked if my parents were ok with that or if they wanted their names. My parents didn’t think anything of it! No regrets and the focus was on me and my husband’s names, as it should be in my opinion ❤️

Together with their families/parents is the most common. Most guests really don't pay attention to who is paying. Also the formality of the invite (wording etc) lets guests know if it is a super formal vs more laid back wedding .

Thanks all! This is super helpful. Leaning toward "Together with their families" or a "Please join us in celebrating the wedding of"

I think the “Together, with their families” would be the best option. However, I would talk with your father & your stepmom so you don’t offend them.

Any option here is fine! I do not recall any wording specifics on any i vitiating I’ve received and I have no idea if it matched the wedding vibes. Your mom is contributing quite a lot even though those are some of the smaller details, they’re not cheap! You can’t go wrong with any of these.
