Invitation "Gift Registry " wording!

Soon2bMrsJamerson, on October 26, 2013 at 8:45 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 10

Hi Ladies,

Im trying to figure out what is an appropriate way to ask our guest not to purchase personalized gifts without sounding distasteful/tacky. We are asking for only monetary gifts and gift cards because we live out of state and have to travel by air . It would be such a hassle to lug all those gifts back via plane.

The best way to do it is not to register at all, and then if anyone asks say something like "Oh, we're saving for a house/car/honeymoon, etc." You'll get mixed opinions on this, but I really hate it when people say things like "Cash only" or "No boxed gifts" on invitations. People know how to give cash or checks, and usually spreading the word is good enough. Good luck!!

You never mention gifts in an invitation. And you never ask for monetary gifts. The only appropriate way to accomplish this is not to have a registry. And if guests ask what you want, you tell them that you really can't carry gifts home with you by air. That leaves them the choice of a) not giving you a gift, b) sending a boxed gift to your home before or after the wedding, or c) giving you money or a gift card.

@2dbride It wasn't going to be physically on the invitation, but on an separate insert card. Thanks ladies for the advice.

Ok I'm going to be honest with you here (because I would want the same in return), No matter how you say it, saying that you only want monetary gifts just comes across as unappreciative..ESPECIALLY on invitations. You really don't want to mention registry at all on invitations. The best place to talk registry is on your wedding website and when people ask you.

So my suggestion for you is to explain to people who ask you about a registry why you would prefer monetary gifts instead because you definitely have a good reason as to why. Usually if you don't have a registry at all people will just bring money in a card instead so maybe just don't mention a registry at all?

It shouldn't go in the invite at all; not on a separate card, not at all. Not registries, not "no boxed gifts" not wishing well, not nothing.

Spread this by word of mouth.

    This is what I wrote:

This on the wedding website not save the date and I havent sent invitation yet!

Thank you for stopping by and visiting our wedding site!

We look forward to seeing you on our special day.

However, if you cannot attend, your thoughts and prayers are greatly appreciated.

Since we already have most of the traditional wedding gift items we only made a small registry to be updated closer to the wedding. However we are saving up for a house.

I found parts of it from weddingbees

You could put something in your wedding website, like "Because of limited luggage space, we might not be able to take gifts home from the wedding. If you would like to give us a gift, it would be best to send it to us at [your address]." You shouldn't ask for money gifts, but guests will appreciate knowing that they shouldn't bring a big box to the wedding. Most online registries let you ship the gift directly to the couple, so don't feel like you can't register for physical gifts too!

Wedding etiquette says you dont mention gifts anywhere on the invite, even an insert. Its ok in a shower insert, since technically, you aren't throwing the shower.

However, new wedding etiquette says its ok to put your wedding website on the invite, and you basically can talk about just about anything on the website...
