Invitation Addressing Question re: Ph.D.'s

Lisa Marie, on March 31, 2012 at 1:57 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 6

I'm working on addressing my invitations this weekend and am coming across different opinions regarding Ph.D.'s. I work at a psychology office, so all of my "bosses" who are invited have a Ph.D. and are referred to as "Dr. so-and-so" by their patients. I found some websites that say that a Ph.D. "doctor" is not noted on a wedding invitation as doctor - but obviously don't want to offend 7 of my bosses! Can anyone clarify this a bit for me? Thanks!

It's called a Doctorate Degree for a reason. Anytime there is a Ph.D. behind a last name, they are referred to as "Doctor," no matter what their area of expertise is.

They are doctors so the invitation should be worded as such. Do you need help with how to write it out? I've got my trusted Emily Post Wedding Etiquette book sitting here on my desk - so just let me know. :-)

Thanks girls! That's what I thought - I just came across websites that said only medical doctors are listed as "doctor" on the invitation and I thought that was weird.

Since Phd's are typically referred to as Dr. in professional and sometimes social settings I would use Dr. since they are your boss.

Obviously not everyone who receives a Doctoral degree is referred to a Dr. (JD and DPT being two examples) so I can see why it can be confusing.

Ah that makes sense now Carrie W! I hadn't even thought about the fact that some Ph.D.'s are not typically referred to as Dr.'s.

I agree, just put Dr. First name, Last name...I think it would be odd on an invitation to put First name, last name Ph.D...since putting PhD at the end is more for professional purposes than a wedding invitation would be.
