Interracial marriage, incorporating your own culture with your other half?

Eva, on October 11, 2014 at 3:45 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 8

What are some customs/traditions that are unique to your culture that you would want to have included as part of your wedding if any at all?

We held a Chinese Tea Ceremony before the actual wedding ceremony. This is traditionally where the Bride and Groom serve Chinese tea to pay respect to elders, relatives and older siblings. Ours was pretty informal, (my husband was such a sport especially with a bunch of relatives yakking loudly in another language... he just went with it!) It meant a lot to my family to incorporate these traditions into our marriage with Western culture. Hoping to get pictures back soon to share!

Well we are having a traditional Nigerian wedding a week before my actual legal wedding. Me and my FH will be in Nigerian clothes and doing all the steps for a Igbo wedding dowry and all.

Also, when we have kids they will have an Igbo name as well as a "english name" I only have nigerian names and though no one gets it right It is a huge source of identity and pride for me. And I'm often told how beautiful and interesting my name is Smiley smile

We're having a Chinese tea ceremony too but it'll be the week before the wedding and there will be a huge party after. My FH and his GM will be presenting my parents with a dowry. As for my Irish heritage, I don't think we will be doing anything specifically to honor that.

Champagne, what about the Irish blessings or a handfasting?

I want to, if I do, it'll be a mix of African American, Irish and German incorporations into the wedding. I'm not sure about German wedding traditions, but I am familiar a little bit with African American and Irish wedding traditions. Like jumping the broom, and as Nancy T. said, handfasting.

We are going to have a lot of Lebanese music and probably Lebanese food at the rehearsal dinner. I also want to get henna on my hands.

I love the handfastings; they're beautiful visually, interesting, and almost no one has seen them.
