Internet Privacy Wedding Registry & Website/Concern about stalkers

CoffeeNColor, on September 19, 2016 at 2:24 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 13

FH and I are thinking setting up our wedding website and registry. The website will have information for guests about the wedding location, suggested accommodations and transit options, and things to do in the area. All of this will be helpful for our guests. There will also be a link to our wedding registry.

I am a lawyer, and I work on some contentious cases. I do not want the defendants in my cases to be able to be able to google me and find out about me and my wedding. I know that registries and sometimes websites can come up on a basic internet search. I'm also not sure what my clients or future employers will perceive if they stumble upon the websites when googling me. Up until now, I've been very careful about much information there is about me on the internet.

How do I protect the information? Are there alternatives to a website? Should I forgo the website altogether? What about registry crawlers like The Knot, etc.?

TIA for your thoughts and suggestions!

I think on the knot they have a pin number feature that you're guests must have to access your website. I think.

Depending on the website you use.. you can password/pin protect it. Your guests would need to know that in order to access it.

I know the Knot gives you the option to turn on or off the search ability on their site and to add a pin.

Wedding wire can also password protect your site if you use them. I would just include the password in your invitation where you mention your website.

We used Mywedding.com and it has a privacy setting that allows you to make a password so that your wedding website is private and the only way you can view it is with a password.

You can make your registry private and password protect your website.

Make sure you do the same with any registries, especially ones you may have created and abandoned a long time ago. I was trying to find a phone number for a client's probation officer and also found her wedding website and registry within the first five results, and learned that's why she was on vacation next week. I'm sure she didn't want that out there with the nature of her job.

You can password-protect the website. I did that and then just included a little card with the website address and password in the invitations. A registry is more difficult--I know Amazon (and probably other retailers) offer the option to have guests ship to your address, but there's a way to make the address itself private. However, that wouldn't do anything about preventing your wedding date/city from appearing, unless you choose not to list one.

A lot of online registries can only be accessed with a password

Our website (Riley&Grey) also allows you to require a password and can be excluded from any search engines....but I just checked and the wedding date does show on the page that requires a password prior to accessing any other details.

Thanks for this post- it made me look and I went back in and was able to change the settings to not show anything prior to entering the password.
