Interfaith Weddings, What did you do?

Alyssa, on September 1, 2019 at 11:48 AM Posted in Wedding Ceremony 0 5

This is more of a fun topic I thought would be interesting for discussion. I myself am an atheist (But have very strong beliefs in Christian morals such as forgiveness and loving everyone no matter what their beliefs are or their race) You know, common human decency stuff lol.

My fiance and I have agreed on a Christian Ceremony as both of our families are avid Christians and my Step Father is actually our minister, and I do consider myself a member of his congregation even if I do not fully believe in god.

But while we were discussing what faith the ceremony should be performed in, it got me curious to know about what other's had done.

What did you and you S.O decide to do?

Did you take aspects from both ceremonies?

Did you just decide to perform one religion's ceremony?

Did you have 2 separate ceremonies? And if so, did you have it for a certain side of the family?

Feel free to share any pictures of your ceremony!

My fiancé is an atheist but I told him it was very important to me to have a prayer and a blessing. He grumbled a little but I told him how strongly I felt and it’s ok with me if he doesn’t pray too so he’s fine now.

I am Pagan and my FW is Christian. We are having an elopement ceremony performed by a friend of mine who is a Christian minister. We will have a handfasting ceremony with friends and family performed by a friend of ours that will also include an elemental blessing. My FW will choose a bible verse to be read at the handfasting and my minister friend has been asked to honor my path in some way as well. We both believe we have similar beliefs but obviously acknowledge that there are differences as well. I initially planned a more subtle blessing, but she insisted I feel free to fully honor my traditions and even bought an altar table where we will place representations of the elements during the ceremony.

I have performed inter-faith ceremonies as well, my very first was between one Jewish bride and one Pagan bride. It can totally be done.

My fiancee and I are both Catholic but I would consider myself an Agnostic for the past decade. My fiancee does not practice Catholicism unless he is at home visiting his parents, who are very Catholic. My fiancee is also East Indian so religion is extremely important from a cultural perspective. I did not want to be married in a church and we were met with a lot of resistance from his family over this. Ultimately we decided to get married in a Catholic Church to keep the peace. I was honest with the priest that I am non-practicing and he was actually really cool about it. We are having a ceremony without a full mass and we will choose the least religious readings that we can. Mixing religions and cultures can be very difficult but I think very common nowadays.

I am Lutheran and my FH grew up strictly catholic but considers himself an atheist now. At first, he said he did not want a religious ceremony at all, but he recently said that he would like it to be Lutheran if that’s what I want, so I’m very thankful!
