Intellectual disabilities, such as Asperger's, and wedding planning

thisismrsb, on October 15, 2018 at 7:35 PM Posted in Community Conversations 0 9

Hello everyone! I am very newly engaged (September 30th) and am looking forward to learning about wedding planning and hearing your stories! If anyone here has an intellectual disability such as Asperger's, or has experience in planning a wedding for someone like me, I would love to hear your stories and what advice you may offer.

My little sister has Asperger's, and while I'm not helping her plan a wedding, she is in mine and I am being very flexible with her. Just remember to take it a day at a time and if you feel overwhelmed confide in someone to talk you down. Honestly, that advice could go to anyone, I tell myself it all the time! Congratulations and I know you'll have a beautiful wedding!

First off, congratulations! My fiance has Asperger's. He's been very hands on with most of the planning, but consultations and interviews with potential vendors wasn't the easiest for him. We talked about what questions he wanted to ask before we met with each vendor but I did most of the talking during the consults. He was really great in taking notes on each one that we could review later. One of the nice things about having a long engagement for us is that he isn't overwhelmed with the people aspect since we can spread out bookings over the next couple years. We've gotten our 3 major vendors taken care of (venue, caterer, photographer) but will take a break until next summer to book the remaining vendors. Take your time and tackle one vendor/piece of planning at a time and enjoy yourself!

Thank you! Yes, I've got a good support system as well. My sister is my Matron of Honor and knows how to talk to me. She has already advised my mother to break down the specs of her venue searching so that I might be able to follow along.

Oh, wow! I am really happy to see your comment here! It's so nice to hear of another neurotypical/neurodiverse couple like us! My fiance is also neurotypical and I feel so grateful to have him in my life. He took the time to get to know me for the first two months and decided to keep me around, quirks and all!

You have some really good advice. We're planning on getting married as early as June. My mom has successfully planned two of my siblings' weddings, so I'm comfortable that she knows what she's doing. She is making a lot of calls on my behalf and I appreciate that. I get to enjoy the ride a little more.

That’s wonderful that you have that support to help you navigate the wedding world. It can be overwhelming for anyone! Feel free to reach out if you have any questions on how we’re handling things or just want to chat/vent/etc! Best of luck in your planning!

That's perfect! A good support system is what anyone needs during this process. My sister is my Matron of Honor as well and she's already helped with a few problems that have popped up. You'll do great 😁
