Insurance for outside alcohol?

QueenOfTheFall86, on July 4, 2018 at 8:31 AM Posted in Planning 0 12
So my venue only serves wine and said we would be able to bring outside liquor/beer and one of their staff would act as a bartender. So I decided on rum & vodka since they’re easy to mix with coke, sprite, etc. trying to keep it simple for them. And of course we’re going to have a keg outside. Everyone is 21+ except the flower girls which will be leaving after dinner.
The event coordinator at the venue told me I need to get insurance either through homeowners or a quote through their insurance company. The quote application through their company was ridiculous - asked questions like if we’re going to have pyrotechnics, circus performers and farm animals, and the list goes on... like what???
So I contacted my fiancé’s homeowners and they got me a quote through Travelers Insurance .... it’s almost $500 for ONE DAY! Not even a whole day... a 4 hour reception.
Is this crazy or normal? Obviously never had a wedding so I’ve never come across this but his parents already purchased all the liquor...

Needing insurance for an event is pretty normal. $500 seems a little high, though not really surprising as an add on through the homeowners. Obviously the insurance company needs to ask those questions because your coverage needs to be different if you’re adding pyrotechnics or live animals, etc. It sounds crazy but lots of people do those things for events they host. I would see what the quote is for their company and then determine which is better.

Travelers actually won't even cover you if you have farm animals, some people rent llamas, or pyrotechnics, and sparkler exits count as pyrotecnics. The liquor liability is probably only $50-65 of the 500, the rest is liability and property damage since I think liquor liability is an optional add on from the price sheet I have. But I got cancellation insurance through them so liability was also an add on. I paid $255 for 20k of cancellation insurance so I have peace of mind if there are any hurricanes or if my venue goes bankrupt.

There's a company called Wedsafe. They're on wedding wire, and it's less than $200. I think 150ish. They also offer wedding insurance for if you have to cancel or something happens with your deposits etc.

Wow thank you. I just did a quote through there. With liability and cancelation it came to $254. So I’ll talk it over with FH and see what he thinks.
    Its a legit site right?

Yes for sure. I have my liability through them. I didn't do the other so mine was less. They give you a certificate and send one to the venue. I'd keep an extra copy just in case.

We are dealing with the same thing! I can understand needing insurance. However, my venue makes us use their bartenders so we are concerned about being liable for the actions of staff that we aren't allowed to hire or bring in ourselves. We are still working on getting quotes but it looks like ours will be several hundred dollars as well.

We got our wedding/event insurance through our homeowners kind co, Allstate. It is $175 And it covers the whole day plus the rehearsal night before, and set up and cleanup. It does NOT included a cancellation policy. That was an extra cost. We are sure were not cancelling, so we opted out of that. I would check again with your company to see if you can save money by not getting the cancellation policy.

I would be cautious that you are getting alcohol liability insurance not just general liability. Our home owners insurance (State Farm) said they do not offer Liquore Liability insurance and that most policies under home owners insurances are only general liability.

Have you contacted wedsafe? They usually have cheaper quotes. Could you hired an insured bartender instead?
