Inserting bra cups during dress alterations?

weliz, on August 1, 2009 at 5:20 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 16

I need to find a strapless bra for my dress before I get it altered. I just came back from a bra boutique, but I have always been hard to fit, and even the pros couldn't find something that would work for me.

I don't want to use stick-on cups, I tried those once and they felt too weird. I've heard of other ladies having cups sewn in to the dress itself. Does the seamstress provide those, or do I have to get them and bring them with me to the fitting? If I have to get them myself, where do I find them?

When I was trying on dresses, they handed me a pair they had on hand to try the dress with as I'm hard to fit as well. They said they could just sew them right in, so I am pretty sure they have extras on hand to sell and to sew in.

My seamstress had them to sew into the dress for me when she did the alterations

Thanks! I'm going to a private seamstress, I'll ask her if I need to bring my own, if so I'll go to JoAnn and see if I can find something that will work. On the plus side, while trying on my dress over the sample bras yesterday, I realized I still love it despite recent doubts, and have faith that I will love it even more once it fits me properly. :-)

Yeah, having the same issue...finding a bra that 1, fits, and 2. doesn't cut me in half. I've thought about the inserts but I'm plus sized and well, not sure they would work. I NEED the 'lift' for the dress to look right, and not sure they would do that....

Weliz - Seamstresses will most certainly be able to take care of that for you. Although, the women that I've shot that have had it done, haven't had the larger chest, so if you fall into that category, not sure how it would work out.

BTW - what does you hubby race? I grew up in Annapolis racing (worked for all the sailmakers - so I can sew myself!), I now have a Lightning that I race just up the road in PA.

I would definitely have them sewn it. i have a friend who wore a strapless and we had to keep pulling up her dress so it wouldn't show and it did show it many of her professional pics, she wasn't happy.

Gershelda, have you considered the stick-on kind like Nubras? I can't use them due to the adhesive, but many people don't have an issue with that.

CB, thanks! The last thing I want to worry about is fussing with my dress that day.

Matt, you read my mind, I was going to email you to see what you race. My FH races a Cal 25 in both summer series and Frostbite, this weekend he was on a friend's J30 for the Gov Cup overnighter.

J30's are probably what I spent most of the time on. I burned out as a sailmaker racing 6 days a week. I've probably sailed on and likely made sails for the boat he sails on somewhere along the line.

Feel free to drop me a note offline.

I had these inserted into my dress... (they also can come out and you can have them sewn into something else which is nice)... I like them SO much better than the corset type bra I was originally going to wear and it feels SO much more comfortable...

I say definitely ask for them and have them put in!!!

Thanks Melissa, I feel better now. I'm 8 weeks out and really need to get started on alterations and this felt like a roadblock.

I'm considering duct tape at this point. It's funny I thought my waist and hips would be the biggest issue and it turns out to be my boobs!

I hear you, Libragurl. I didn't think this part would be such a challenge!

Laura K suggested sports tape. I think that would be better than duct tape considering it is made to resist sweating.

Libragurl - if you're seriously considering duct tape, look into gaffer's tape. It is essentially the same thing as duct tape, but it actually releases and doesn't leave a residue.
