Inner & Outer Invite Envelopes...?

Haley, on February 3, 2020 at 1:52 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 15

I'm still on the fence about whether the whole "2 envelope" thing is really necessary.

My main question is, are they the same size envelopes?

I just ordered my 70 invites from vistaprint and they come with 70 envelopes. I have an invite, details card, and then for 20 people I will have paper RSVP cards plus a return envelope for the RSVP.

Am I supposed to put all that into the envelope and then go out and buy 70 MORE envelopes that those go into?

Will they fit if they're the same size envelope?

If the 2 envelope thing is the "right" way, why don't they recommend you buy double the amount of envelopes?

Is this REALLY necessary or is this one of those things people did a long time ago and no one REALLY cares anymore?

I think this is definitely one of those things that was necessary years ago but isn't necessary anymore. I haven't gotten an invitation with two envelopes in years.

If you do want to go that route, the inner envelope would need to be a hair smaller than the outer envelope.

Ok good. I really don't want to waste the time or money doing 2 envelopes. It seems a little weird to me honestly haha.

If I wasn't planning my own wedding, I would think it's strange to get an invite in the mail wrapped in 2 envelopes haha

Inner envelopes seemed like an unnecessary formality and cost so I skipped them!

RSVP cards are usually smaller than the invite and details card and are self-addressed and stamped. The details card goes alongside the invite.

So to make a pile --

the invite is on the bottom,

    then the details card, t

    hen the RSVP envelope,

then the RSVP card (is placed on top of the pile)

... all are tucked inside of the invite envelope.

Make sure you have it weighed at the post office to be sure you have enough postage on the invites with the RSVPs.

I don't see the point of it. That being said when I ordered my invites through Ann's there was no option and I got both an inner and outer envelope. I'm not really sure what I would do with an 100 extra envelopes so I might use them to just get rid of them.

As an adult, I've never received an invitation with an inner envelope. If you're having a super formal wedding, I would go for it, otherwise they're not necessary.

We ordered from vista print back when the envelopes were free so we got the correct size from vista print.

We also addressed and stamped the return envelopes so they just have to slip the RSVP inside, seal it, and send it on its way!

In the long run, I wouldn't care about receiving a return envelope since it's cheap to mail things haha. I don't do snail mail much anymore but I do keep a sheet of stamps and box of envelopes on deck just in case Smiley smile

I'm deff having a return envelope. I was asking about the inner and outer envelopes, like you're "supposed" to have an outer envelope addressed to Mr. & Mrs. Smith, and then inside that in supposedly another envelope addressed to John Smith and Jane Smith, and inside that envelope is the invitation, details card, RSVP return envelope and RSVP card (from what I understand).

I personally think that's just too much haha.

It's all good! Apparently no one does this anymore so the older ladies who are "helping me" are out of date hahaha

I read that the inner envelope is to write everyone’s name that is invited to the wedding (kids and all) instead of “The Smith Family”

I ordered mine through Anns and received the inner envelopes and that’s what I’m gonna use them for. My family is awful at bringing more people than invited. We are already over the limit at our venue. At my sisters wedding, a bunch of people brought friends and kids that my sister, mom, grandma has never met!

But if you don’t receive them with your invites, i wouldn’t buy them to use them

Ok cool. I guess I'll see. I have no clue if they're coming with them or not.

My "inner envelope" is just a pocket I'm creating to hold all of my invitation suite together without it floating around in the outer envelope. If I didn't have business card sized details cards that I am afraid would get left behind in the regular envelope, I'd forego the pocket. If I were you, I'd just put all the pieces in the regular envelope.

Ok cool. I think I'm going to just put a ribbon or something around them all and put them in the "outer" envelope haha.
