Infection risk with makeup application?

MadKitty, on August 19, 2017 at 10:59 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 18

I've only had my makeup done professionally maybe 2 times in my life- both were proms (15 yrs ago). It kinda gives me the willies that these brushes are used on many other people, and being in healthcare I know the dangerous bacteria they can harbor. I have also heard many horror stories. As an industry standard, these brushes are to be "sanitized" after each client, and I know disposable tools are used as well. But I still think back to a professor of mine who got herpes on her chin from a make up application! That being said, I will of course try to find a very professional MUA that I trust. But I may want to purchase my own make up and tools. Have any of you done this? Do I sound nuts? Will MUAs generally be ok with me getting my own stuff? TIA!

Do you wear makeup everyday? You're going to spend a whole lot of money on brushes and makeup if you're only going to use it for one day. I could see if you regularly wear makeup, taking the expense, but it seems like a waste if you are only buying it for the day.

I would just negotiate with a mua to use new brushes out of the plastic or disposable tools.

They probably won't be okay with it since brushes from the drugstore are very different in quality from brushes (and as a result, the application of the makeup) at Sephora or Ulta.

That will be beyond expensive, to buy all your own professional-quality stuff, and then hire someone to apply it. Like, four-figure expensive, assuming you buy the kinds of products and brushes makeup artists use.

You can always ask them to use only disposable tools for eyes and lips, and do airbrush for face

I got my makeup professionally done twice in my life and got pink eye the night after... both times. That's why I'm opting to do my own makeup! I would rather not have pink eye while on my honeymoon lol

Geez! I never thought of catching something. Luckily I wear makeup often, have my own brushes and will do my own. Yikes, herpes on the chin? Never new this was possible. Very scary.

All my makeup artist friends either use disposables or have a very very rigorous disinfecting process but they never have a problem with someone requesting disposable only or using a clients brushes. You should talk to your MUA and I'm sure she'll be more than willing to do what you ask

Thank you for posting. I've never thought about this risk and now I'm going to definitely be looking into doing my own makeup.

I usually provide my own lipstick and mascara and they are good with that the rest I see as fine as long as it's cleaned

Any true professional MUA knows how to effectively clean and disinfect their brushes and uses disposable tools for the eye area and mouth where infections can be spread. If you are hiring a true professional MUA they should know these things and you will be fine. Most MUA's are picky about brands that they use so you will just have to check every item with them before you buy to see if it is something they would even use.

I didn't mean to freak everyone out! Sorry for that lol. But it's good to be informed. Anywho- if I were to buy my own make up/brushes it would be professional quality, and would clear the brands with the MUA beforehand. I do wear make up almost daily but on the lighter side, so I def don't have all the products they will use. I'm ok with the cost when I consider the cost of herpes haha. Thank you all for the input and I think I will either ask for disposables or put my trust in a good professional who values cleanliness =)

Professional makeup artists usually use disposable tools to apply makeup, and nothing touches it that had human contact. If you decide to use a professional, ask them how they apply the makeup. They get your concerns and they would be happy to tell you. You could also ask them if they could use your own makeup. They could recommend products for you to buy for them to use.

Definitely feared this too when trying to find a mua. Just talk to them about the tools they use. Like most people said, they tend to use disposables.

Professionals SHOULD be cleaning/getting new brushes regularly. However, you do have the right to ask that they use brand new brushes on you, but you might have to pay a little extra for that.

The only thing that I would provide myself would be liquid things around the eyes (eyeliner, mascara) and maybe the lipstick.

I wouldn't buy your own stuff, it's not worth it. I'm sorry your friend had a bad experience - that would be so awful!

A professional MUA is able to sanitize anything that is multi use across different clients. You should not see them "redipping" disposables into mascara tubes, lipgloss, etc. Pencils, lipsticks can be sanitized.

I would book a trial and watch their habits. If something turns you off, find a new MUA.

The MUA you chose should have clean and new products to use on your face, especially brushes and applicators. You are allowed to request that new brushes and such are used on your skin.

Buying your own stuff is going to cost you more than hiring a MUA! Trust the professional you are hiring.

Also Private User that suggested that the MUA clean the brushes in front of OP, have you never *properly* sanitized and cleaned a makeup brush before?? They need about 24 hours drying time. The quickie clean stuff will not give this OP the clean she is demanding.
