Incorporating culture into the wedding

Jaclyn, on July 18, 2017 at 12:57 PM Posted in Planning 0 19

FH's family is from Brazil, his mom was pregnant with him when they moved here ( USA ) from Brazil so they fluently speak Portuguese. I am trying to figure out ways to incorporate their proud heritage into the wedding. So far I have a few idea's which I love and his family will really love it. For the ceremony we are going to have a translator to translate from English to Portuguese ( He has some family traveling here from Brazil for the wedding! So awesome! ) and also we got super lucky with our DJ who was recommended by our venue. He speaks a bit of the language as well and has agreed to make some of our announcements in Portuguese and play some of their music! His wife is also from Brazil!

I also have in the plans to do a Brazilian dessert table. His mom wants to make some desserts that we love so much and some different candies.

What have you done to incorporate cultures into your wedding? Do you love it or just doing it for the family? AND GO!! Smiley smile

Everyone has culture... anglo-saxon customs doesn't equal lack of culture.....

Snark aside, we're pouring tea as part of a Vietnamese ceremony into a western ceremony. A few motifs, but the tea is the most important thing. It's more of a way to honor my heritage since I'm adopted and I have a relationship with my biological family.

I'm Puerto Rican, FH is Jewish and from Jersey. The wedding is in PR. The band is Puerto Rican and the venue is historical/Spanish colonial. We will be doing the Hora and FH's parents will escort him down the aisle.

My family is Jamaican and FH is Puerto Rican and Italian. We are using food to kind of give a nod to our backgrounds. It's all very subtle and most things are more general Caribbean/Latin fusions, not specifically Puerto Rican or Jamaican. Like we have mango and shrimp ceviche with a plantain garnish and chicken empanadas with avocado crema as two of our hors D'Oeuvres, risotto as one of the entree sides, and chimichurri sauce topping the steak. I would like to give mini servings of black cake (a Jamaican rum cake) as a favor. His parents insist that we serve espresso after dinner, so we may have that available to order. If we decide on mini desserts at the table, I'd love to have tiramisu shooters. Just little somethings for everyone to appreciate.

So @Catti Labelle any way I can get an invite? Food sounds amazing.

BTW: I'm sure you just loved another person inviting themselves to your wedding. Lol.

FH is Vietnamese. For our ceremony, I will say my vows in English, and he will say his in Vietnamese. For the reception, we are serving a traditional 7 course Vietnamese meal, wearing ao dai (traditional Viet wedding attire) for our table visits, and are thinking about doing a Chinese dragon dance since we are getting married the weekend of Chinese New Year. FH also wants to do his mother/son dance to a Vietnamese song. Incorporating FH's culture into our wedding has been so much fun! I'm excited for my family to experience it.

You are on the right track!! My FH was the officiant for our friends wedding. The brides family is from Costa Rica. As a surprise, he incorporated a few Spanish phrases into the ceremony, including the super important, "I now pronounce you husband and wife, you may kiss the bride" When I say her family loved it, I mean THEY. LOVED. IT. Several people came up to him that night in appreciation - many who didn't know very much English! The bride has mentioned numerous times that the family still remembers the gesture whenever the wedding is brought up in conversation.

Both my fiance and I are Scottish and Irish, so the guys are wearing kilts, we will be doing a handfasting along with the vows, and incorporating Celtic music into the ceremony and the reception. Also, I want the decor to be reminiscent of a rustic Scottish/Irish hunting lodge. And to celebrate my southern heritage, we are having BBQ and traditional fixings for dinner.

@Sheri Thank you! I do love the Brazilian culture so I really want my Future family to see how proud I am of their heritage. Plus it is fun and it will be a very different experience for my family and friends.

My family is from Portugal, but we really aren't doing anything special for the wedding. I did ask the DJ to play some Portuguese music during cocktail hour and maybe one song to do a traditional dance to. My dress and veil are very Portuguese though.

@Sos0033 Playing some Portuguese music will be so cool for your guests! FH's cousin's wedding had almost all Spanish music at theirs. It was different and nice to hear something different from the normal wedding music

OP--sounds amazing and I'm sure it means a lot to your FH's family that you've worked to incorporate their culture into your wedding. That's what weddings are about--2 individuals coming together to form 1 unit. I love the caprihani idea for the signature drink and some Brazilian samba music.

I'm Italian and Spanish and my fiance is French-Canadian and Anglo-Saxon, so we really brought out our culture in our food, as well as our regional heritage (New England and Maine). Our cocktail hour has all foods that are either a nod to our culture or where we're from (gazpacho, poutine, mini-lobster rolls, etc).
