Include future Fil's girlfriend in family photos.

Nicole, on March 12, 2018 at 12:34 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 16

My future father-in- law is thrice divorced, and now has a girlfriend he has been with for a few months who is pregnant (and will still be pregnant at our wedding). This unborn child will be FH's half sibling. Do we include his father's girlfriend in our formal family photos? Future father-in-law is not engaged or married to this woman, but since she is carrying FH's half sibling, we aren't sure if we are obligated to include her in our family photos. I'm considering having just one of her + FIL + us, but don't know if she should be in the larger group ones, etc.

I said you don't have too, if they have been only dating for months. But to save any issues you might have you could always do one picture with her and one without.

I would include her in a couple and then a couple without her as well.

That could be a tough situation but I wouldn’t. I would have her in a few photos but not the formal family photos. I would have FH talk to his dad ahead of time and let him know.

I have a good relationship with my parent’s SOs, but I still won’t have them in all my photos. We will do some with them but I also want one with just my brother and mom, just my brother and dad, etc. Nothing personal against them, and they’ll understand the difference between my parents who raised me, and themselves who entered my life as an adult.

I think it's pretty easy to do some with her and some without.

Lol what's with all the FILs with multiple marriages today? There was this exact question posted earlier, wondering if the FIL's SIXTH wife had to be included in photos.

I would say yes, you need to include her, especially since she's pregnant with your future sibling-in-law. That said, I also think it's perfectly ok to have some with just his dad as well. Mention it to your photographer, and have them facilitate the stepping in and out of different groupings of people. If it comes from you, she, or your FFIL, might be offended. If it comes from the photographer, they probably won't think twice about it.

My FIL has a gf (who is actually evil and made wedding planning and nightmare but that's a different story). We didn't have her in any of the big group pics but we did a pic with her, me, my H, and FIL, another one with the same people plus BIL, and then one of just FIL and GF. I dunno if she had an issue with it but I didn't really care at that point.

ETA: To @MFB's statement. Def make a detailed list of the pictures you want and who you want in them (ex, not the Smith Family but John, Jacob, Jenny, and Bob Smith). This makes it cut and dry who's in which pic and like she said, its easier when it comes from the photographer.

Have a shot list, and have her in a few, but not all photos. I didn't let any BILs/siblings gf in my photos, it should be understandable to not be in such an important days photos.

I second this, it keeps the peace, and will only take 5minutes.

I would use the same mindset as with SOs, meaning, it isn't my place to judge their seriousness. I would include her in all the shots I would include her in if she was his wife.

I suppose you could be nice and just do 1 with her in it, that's what I'm doing with my mom and her BF so she can have that copy. My dad on the other hand has been with my SM for almost 10 years and she has a bigger role in my life.

A little different situation since BIL’s gf is not pregnant, but they have been together for a while, her and I are pretty close, so we did some with her and some with out. She was honestly more hesitant to be in photos then we were to have her in them. When we designed our album we talked it out in length as to how we would feel if they broke up, but she was apart of our life and our special day, so we included her in one or two photos that went into our album. You can have photos with her in them, doesn’t mean they need to make the album.

Lucky for you, you can talk to your photographer about it, and let them know you only want a few with her, but definitely more without. Let them know the situation in advance.
