Impromptu Dress Appointment

Tara, on September 22, 2019 at 12:39 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 20
My wedding isn’t until 8/22/2020 but I’ve been avoiding dress shopping. I hate shopping and I’m about 25lbs heavier than I’d like to be. I’m also on a strict budget. Well I saw that David’s Bridal is having a huge sale right now, so I scheduled an appointment for tomorrow! I’m excited... yet nervous. 😐 I’m not really prepared at all either mentally or physically. Any advice?

Be open to trying different things on, that way you may find you like something more than ya think

Be firm on your budget but flexible as to what you’ll try on. You May live a dress you hate on the hanger, or a style you don’t think you like.
    Dont feel pressured to buy.
The consultant is (supposed to be anyway) the expert. Let them suggest things and try on some of their picks that you might be hesitant about.
    Meat before you go.
    Take water.
Trying on dresses is not all hearts & flowers-it’s work, too.

Don't be afraid to try on dresses that aren't pretty on the hanger. A lot of times, they look fantastic once you put them on! Also, take the consultant's advice after you try on a few you like. Sometimes their picks are different from what you'd imagine yourself liking. And dont try anything that us our of your price range. You run the risk of falling in love with it and being sad when you can't afford it. Have fun!!

Why would you be discouraged? Are you worried about something in particular?

Despite the less than happy advice, it’s FUN to try on pretty princess dresses! It’s work, yes, but it’s exciting to see yourself in the dress you may be wearing on your wedding day.

I’m worried I won’t find something I like that looks good on me. I’m overly critical of myself sometimes, and I’m not a fan of shopping in general. I know I’ll be discouraged if I have to do it multiple times. I’m sure I’m worried about nothing though.

Don’t take it too seriously! It’s supposed to be fun. Dress shopping was one of the highlights of being engaged and I am far from my ideal weight, I went to a salon for plus sized brides and they made me feel so beautiful. Just remember you don’t have to buy anything that day so there’s no pressure. Let your stylist take the lead, you’ll probably be pleasantly surprised by some styles and dresses. Go with someone supportive if you can. We FaceTimed two of my bridesmaids and another bridesmaid and my mom all came and it made it so much easier. They were honest, but mostly just supportive of what I loved.

Lots of us have found our dress at our first (only) appointment. Plenty have had to go to several appointments. And if that’s you, so what? Don’t get discouraged. Treat it like a treasure hunt-your dress is out there, you just haven’t found it yet. And when you do, you’ll be so happy you’ll forget all about the struggles or disappointment elsewhere.

When i went dress shopping I didn’t feel ready or excited at all. My FMIL was coming into town and pretty much gave me no choice but to look at dresses. I ended up finding a dress I love.
I would go into it with no expectations. You’re just going to look. Maybe you’ll start to feel it and try on some dresses, maybe you’ll find your dream dress. Put zero pressure on yourself and the day and just have fun. You’ve got so much time until you’re wedding, use this as a day to try all kinds of styles, even ones you don’t necessarily like on the hanger.

And honestly if it’s not fun, and you’re not feeling it, you can always leave. You’re not in a position where you need to buy a dress ASAP. Enjoy the day!! Oh and go with a super small group, of only people who are supportive. If you’re feeling less than stellar about yourself you definitely don’t need random extra opinions.
    Have fun!!

I’m only taking my MOH with me who is very supportive. My mother lives out if state, and with it being so last minute, it’s kind of a good excuse to not invite a posse.

I went with just my MOH and I think it was one of the best choices I could have made.

I’m hoping I’ll be the same way! I initially (months ago) thought I would invite my FMIL and step FMIL, but that’s too many people in my opinion. If I find something I like, I might FaceTime my mom since she’s out of state. I guess we’ll see!

I am overweight and absolutely HATE shopping. Online shopper only! But dress shopping is such a different experience, these dresses are MADE to make you feel amazing and flattering. I felt so beautiful on every dress I tried on - just make sure to try a few different styles so you know what you’re comfortable in. I hated anything tight fitting, so we went with a few A-Line dresses. I never thought I’d find a dress but I walked out of BHLDN with my winner 😍

Don't put too much pressure on it. You do not need to get a dress tomorrow. I went shopping and bought my dress 15 lbs heavier than I wanted to be. I lost the weight before the wedding so they just altered it. Go in hydrated & eat before, it's tiring!

Well I found a dress! It was exhausting. I’m a little bummed that I never had that “wow” moment. I tried on probably 20+ dresses and the one I went with looked best on my body! It’s also very practical for me. I tried on a mermaid that looked nice too, but I didn’t like feeling so confined. Don’t mind my face 🤣
