Impatient with Long Engagement

Alexis, on January 8, 2019 at 12:39 PM Posted in Planning 0 6
Hi everyone! I got engaged back on July 4, 2018, and after 5 months of being engaged, we finally settled on a date. We plan to pay in full for everything ourselves, so for financial as well as personal reasons, we chose a long engagement and are getting married on our 5 year anniversary: December 6, 2021. We toured a venue, back when we were undecided on a date, that is all-inclusive, and went back after deciding on our date to find that they were running a special discount on deposits, so of course we jumped to book and lock in our price. I mean it when this venue takes care of EVERYTHING, besides the obvious attire and a few other vendors they feel are more personal (photog & officiant). Since our wedding is so far out, it will be a while before we can really start working with what we have, but I'm just too excited and super impatient!! I'm trying to figure out how to space everything out so I can still enjoy the process without being frustrated.

I also really want to start looking at dresses, but I don't know when it would be appropriate to do so or to buy one. I've seen posts where brides purchase theirs as far as a year and a half out, but even then, I still have a year and a half to go before that point. What do I do?

Making a list and a timeline is the easiest way to stay on track and not get bored or stressed! Even create a budget timeline of when you plan to save and make deposits so you always feel in control of your money.

I was a bride who bought my dress a year and a half out. I was impatient and I wanted to know what I was wearing. Honestly, I could have waited, and I have grown more in my style and have changed my mind. Of course I love my dress that I'm wearing on my day, but if I went back to the salon I would have tried other things now. New styles also come out all of the time. Every season. There are so many newer dresses that take my breath away and had I waited, I might have gotten one of those.

There are certain aspects you don't want to plan too early because you could kick yourself later down the line. Good luck to you!

I would start dress shopping 1 year - 1.5 years out. Then purchase anywhere for 10-12 months out. You have a lot of time to save & plan your honeymoon, maybe focus on that? If you can afford it, I've heard of people taking mini "pre" honeymoons prior to the wedding too?

Hi Alexis! Welcome to WeddingWire and congrats on your engagement!

You received some great insight here and I agree, dress shopping 1 year - 1.5 years out is a good plan. That way, you can purchase it and have ample time for fittings & alterations before the big day. Do you have any ideas of styles or silhouettes you might be interested in? Smiley heart

You have a good chunk of time to save and plan for your wedding & honeymoon, both, so perhaps focusing on those for now? In addition, it's never too early to start getting ideas down for specific details, researching venues, and saving inspo pics for decor & more, too. Smiley heart

So far, I'm really loving either super boho, bell or flutter sleeves, vintage lace, all that, or really plain, simple, all white gowns like Meghan Markle style. Both styles in sheath/fit and flare silhouettes. I've got plans for saving and budgeting in place, but we are still trying to figure out precisely what we want to do for a honeymoon! Currently working on ideas for DIY favors. ❤
