I'm stuck! Tailgate style reception food......what to serve?

Jamie, on March 11, 2015 at 9:56 AM Posted in Planning 0 11

I am breezing right through so many details, and things are magically falling into place, woohoo! While our ceremony will be simple with a gazillion candles and fall leaves, the reception is one I hope that my FH remembers forever. We are huge Kansas City Chiefs fans, and have opted for a Chiefs themed reception. Kansas City is known for it's amazing tailgate parties prior to the games......how do I incorporate that into an affordable reception, food wise. It is a 7 pm wedding, so no dinner will be served but we will definitely need to provide some food. Thoughts?

Unfortunately I don't have advice to offer, but as a huuuuge football fan I would be so pumped to attend a reception like that.

When I think of tailgating food, I think of chili (you can have a few different types), pulled pork sliders, kabobs of any sort, chips and dip, pasta salad, potato salad, individual cups with ranch in the bottom and veggies, assortment of cookies and cupcakes (or just wedding cake). I don't know if this helps.

Here are some staples at the tailgates I attend:

    Sandwich trays

Chips and dip (as many different kinds as you want)

    Wings

    Little smokies

    Veggie trays

We do a ton of tailgating for the Phillies. Normally, we'll have the basic hot dogs, hamburgers, bratwurst and then throw in some Philly staples like cheesesteaks and soft pretzels. You could do something like a nacho bar or a fry bar. For a dessert, I would do mini cupcakes, brownies or cookies.

All of these ideas help, thank you! We are entertaining all of these ideas, and will have to see what happens when we know how many we have to feed.

Kaylarae- thank you! We are doing wheat grass centerpieces with our teams pennants, custom jersey's for the guys (and me if I choose to change) and of course stadium music for our intros Smiley smile. Even the invites will be sporting event ticket style. Hopefully we will get lucky and there will be a home game the next day so the party can continue!

That is such a fun idea!! I think anything grilled would be great- my tailgate crew always does Italian sausage with peppers and onions. Half sandwiches would be good for a heavy app. The chips/ dip/ veggie tray is always a good option. Are you going to have tailgate games?

Oh how I love wings, beer, and football!

I'd suggest wings, sliders, chips and dips, and maybe small sandwiches. Please tell me your reception involves corn hole (or as we call it.... boards). If it does can I come??? lol (jk don't create a board about the weird stranger who invited herself to your wedding)

You should plan on having a lot of food if you aren't serving dinner. 7pm is dinner time. People will likely arrive by 6pm for your ceremony.

What a great idea and theme! Anything grilled...hot dogs, brats, sausages, (and allthe fixens), chips, tato salad, and ice cold beer! Yay!

If I went to a 7pm wedding I would be expecting dinner, you may want to either have it earlier or make sure you have enough for people to really eat a full meals worth. The good thing is that chili and Bbq foods are relatively cheap, easy and filling
