I'm So Flustered And Confused!!! *rant* 😭😭

Jasmine, on August 1, 2021 at 10:14 PM Posted in Wedding Ceremony 0 40
We met with our officiant today (a friend of mine who's done it before and is also a notary) and we are not happy. She told us that in order for her to legalize the day of our wedding, she needs to send in her application to do so 30 days prior. We are about 2 weeks out. We told her BACK IN MARCH that we were getting married in August and even confirmed in June that she will still be doing it!

According to her she's been battling multiple departments trying to figure out who she was even supposed to be talking to. If you've done it before, you shouldn't have had an issue. Am I wrong or am I missing something?? We're not even sure when she actually started trying to contact anyone but she says she was finally able to reach the correct people almost 2 months ago. They just responded to her earlier this week.
She can still perform the day of but we're literally forced to get married this Thursday, PRIOR to our actual wedding date. It really hurts that we've been pinned against the wall like this. We absolutely refused to postpone again since our guests already made travel arrangements. I just wish I could wake up from this.

It’s on the couple getting married to obtain your marriage license, not the officiant. You should contact the local security of state (in the county you’re getting married in) tomorrow as soon as they open. Hopefully they will allow you to expedite the document. I received mine back within two weeks but you need to move quickly. Go online and fill out the application and get the documents ready so when they open tomorrow you’re prepared to drop it off to them if possible.

We have our paperwork. Now we just have to take that to justice of the peace to get married prior, instead of doing it the day of with our officiant. There's an application that SHE needed to sign and send in for HER to legally officiate instead of just performing afterward.

Got it. In that case, reach out to some officiants in the area now to see if any are available on that day as backup.

But if officiants have to send in their application 30 days prior, I wouldn't be able to use anyone else for the legality of it, right?? No matter who I use, it will just be a formal performance at that point cause we would already be married by our wedding date. I'll probably still look into and ask around.

    Thanks

This is the first I’ve ever hear of an officiant having to apply for something. Once you go through the process at first to get ordained, I’m pretty sure you’re set forever. I’d do some more research.

I absolutely agree with Cool. Reach out to some professional officiants in your area to clarify, but I’ve never heard of needing additional paperwork outside of being ordained.

I'm a little confused, why exactly do you have to get married prior to your wedding date? Also, is that just something that needs to be done by the officiant in your state? I have never heard of that in my life.

Yea. Definitely looking into it. Like I'm so mad. Cause I never questioned it until now with her being so late. If this happened earlier and everything was on time, I wouldn't have questioned it at all.

Girl, I'm just as confused. I'm hitting up officiants officiants tomorrow cause apparently it isn't a thing if you're already ordained but she told me she was ordained so when we talked today, I just figured it was a thing where they have to apply for every wedding they do. Like she's seriously pissed me off like I'm not stressing enough already.

I thought anyone can be ordained in a day. Does your state require them or register once ordained? Seems fishy if you ask me. . .good luck with your research.

Thank you. And I thought so unless our state sucks or she's just being difficult. I've been told different things, I'm not even sure what's what anymore.

Doesn't make sense. What state are you getting married in? I've never heard of such a long waiting period.

Some states have a thing that an officiant can be licensed for one day only if they aren’t already one. It sounds like she isn’t a professional officiant.

I am rather confused. Why would you be forced to get married this Thursday and who would even be performing that ceremony?

Aside from that, it sounds like your friend misled you. She either was never actually ordained or like Samantha said in some states you can be licensed for just one day. At this point, I would go on WeddingWire, The Knot, or even Google wedding celebrants in your area to try to locate someone who could perform your ceremony on your actual date. I would recommend calling them rather than emailing them because if you can get someone on the phone they should be able to tell you immediately whether they are available or not rather than waiting to hear back if you were to email them.

I hope you don't mind I snooped your profile to figure out where you were getting married so I could look into this.

Samantha is correct - from what I am reading, your friend is not a licensed officiant.

    https://www.clarkcountynv.gov/government/elected_officials/county_clerk/other_services/marriage_officiants_(becoming_a_marriage_officiant).php

This is just one county, but I imagine they are all similar. Your friend must not have the 5-year license, therefore she needed to file for a single-day license - which, yes, the application cut off was 30 days prior.

    Your choices are as follows:

-Get married prior to your actual wedding date so that your friend can still perform the ceremony as a non-legally binding commitment ceremony
-Find a licensed officiant with an active 5-year license

Sorry this happened to you so close to your wedding date.

NV but I'm not even 100% sure what she was doing. I never questioned it until now cause she never mentioned it before so when she hit us with the 30 days at 2 weeks, I'm just like what?!?! Are you actually using this as a means to be officially be ordained for the 1st time?? Like I have zero knowledge on this so I'm contacting officiants through this channel later on today to get some answers and possibly get someone else to do it so we don't have to get married before our actual wedding.

Thats definitely the vibe we started getting after she pulled this on us. Like we could have been had someone booked and now we're gonna have to scramble and hope we find someone who is still available.

Yea. Definitely what I was thinking. I saved a few from weddingwire already so I'm going to start contacting them a little later today. Like all these months that went by though. Even without her being a professional one, she's known since March. She definitely had plenty of time. It's just frustrating.
