I’m not one to get sticker shock easily...

But oh my goodness my alterations bill gave me a good shock lol. I’m not even sure if I can type out how much they were just yet haha. I’ve been on this forum about a year so I’ve seen lots of threads about how much people paid for alterations and always thought ‘wow some of these ladies paid way too much!’ Well ladies I might have 95% of you beat 🙈

My dress is a fit and flare with lace appliqués all over it and I had the following done:

The sides had to be taken in all up and down the dress, the area below the butt had to be taken in, it had to be hemmed and the lace appliqués moved up a little to preserve the lace, the cups had to be taken in, cups added, the beaded straps had to be shortened, some appliqués were puckering and had to be smoothed our and we lowered the back to make it look better. And all of this was done while preserving the lace. So I know it would be expensive, she also had her senior alterations specialist work on my dress because of how technical it was and I’m almost 100% sure no one else would’ve been able to do what she did so it was obviously worth it.

But oh my goodness I did not think I would spend almost as much as the dress on alterations. I hope I’m not the only one out there who’s spent a pretty penny on getting their dress to fit! 🙈 If I see I’m not the only one I’ll post how much it was lol.

My dress was $798 and my alterations bill is $595, so yeah, I feel you. And all I'm getting done is a hem, bustle, and taking in around the bust. I have a lace fit and flare as well.

It makes sense that fit and flares are more expensive to alter, I don’t think I would’ve switched dresses though, I wanted to look and feel amazing. I *thought* I was going to spend what you spent lol. Hint #1 😂

I have a fit to flare gown as well that will need the sides taken in just a bit. I’m also having the train shortened some and adding a bustle. The fabric is hard to explain, it’s called “sugar rose caviar” (Hayley Paige gown). My bridal salon said alterations should cost around $400. I REALLY hope they are right lol. I might stroke out if it’s much more than that.

Well you are having a lot more done to your gown than I had to. I was also incredibly lucky in that the sample was relatively new and fit great for the most part, so I took it home for 50% off the price of the dress.

$400 is not bad at all! I have a new found perspective for how much work dresses are!

That’s awesome that you got a sample dress! I knew there was a lot that had to be done with the dress and I was a nervous wreck wondering how the heck it could all be done! So I’m super happy to see it look the way I hoped it would!

I feel your pain. It sounds like you had a lot done, so I can understand why it got expensive. I had the back built up on my dress to cover my tattoo, plus adjusting the hem, straps, etc. It cost me $600 not including the extra fabric I ordered.

Sorry you had sticker shock! That was one area I thought would be a lot more expensive than they were. I have a mermaid style dress that has beading and lace all over the bodice. The skirt is all ruffles. She has to hem it, take in the butt, take in the hips, add a 3-5 point bustle, add cups, and fix the sweetheart neckline so it’s not sticking up after the cups are out in. To do all of the bodice alterations, she has to take the lace and beading off the dress and reapply it afterwards... so she’s doing a lot of work to it (besides the sides since I have a corset back). She’s only charging us $305!!! I was SHOCKED! I thought it’d be over $500. We’re also getting her to add crystals and beading to my veil so it matches the bling on the dress (I have a custom-made cathedral veil with lace flowers all on the bottom). She’s not charging much at all for that either! It’ll only be $100ish for labor and whatever the supplies cost.

My dress was 600 and alterations were about 400. We went to David's bridal for the dress and local woman for alterations. My sticker shock came from the flower quote. 1400 for flowers.
