I’m i Crazy to Make My Own Dress?

Emalee, on November 21, 2019 at 6:04 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 14
So I have sewing experience and very tight budget. From compiling scraps from thrift store dresses and fabric donations I’m trying to sew my own. I’m trying to stay on a budge and have everything I want.

Any tips or advice or warning? Anyone ever done this before?
I have pictures below. The first is a general overview of how I want my dress to look. A satin long sleeve top with a thick floral lace bottom. And it will transform somehow into a shorter/looser dress because I have outdoor games at my wedding. Just like a skirt change or something. If you can do it and it saves money, do it!

I would just have a plan B in case it doesn't work out.

    Good luck!

Sounds like a hot mess with a headache but I can’t sew! 😜 I’d give yourself plenty o’time to buy a dress if the sewing is more work than reward.

I love sewing! I’m actually in the opposite boat that I do it so much I want to take a break for once and buy my own dress lol! Easiest thing to do is to find a good pattern and stick with it. Both of the dresses you posted should not be difficult to find patterns for at all. I would recommend to make the bodice longer or more of a mini dress for the skirt change so the skirt has something to sit on and you won’t have any accidental tummy exposure.

I attended a wedding where the bride made her own dress and it was exactly what she wanted! You do you, girl!

My sister made her daughter's wedding gown. It was gorgeous, but she literally spent nearly 500 hours and thousands of dollars on it. If it's a gift of love to yourself, go for it!

I think just budget your time well. I am probably not at the sewing level you are but personally even if I felt I was awesome at it, I probably would still make sure I had a year+ out to make it.

If you have the skills, go for it. It will be time consuming, and I will assume frustrating as well, but the end result could be unique and amazing. Just take a real hard look at what it will cost you in time and supplies to make sure it ends up worth it for you.

My advice is to take your TIME... try to give yourself plenty of time to accomplish this so that way you don’t make unnecessary mistakes from rushing.. I am like halfway done with the skirt portion of my gown and I am loving every step of the process... I often go days or weeks without even touching it so I don’t get overwhelmed but I also have two years to finish it.
