I have read some posts about scared brides canceling their weddings or honeymoons in the Dominican Republic and I would like you to think about this for a moment.
In 2015 I was awarded a full scholarship to live and get my master's degree in the US. Do you know how many school shootings happened in the US that same year? FIFTEEN (only before I got to the US). My parents and friends were scared but I still made it and it was an awesome experience. According to the media, there are school shootings happening all the time in the US (actually 288 in the last 10 years) and do people start homeschooling after that or do people stop traveling to the US for that reason? No.
Now let's talk about tourism, Mexico is the country with the most travel warnings for US travelers, with a total of 28 and yet Mexico it's a wonderful destination. Another gorgeous country is Colombia and has had 18 travel warnings so far. How many travel warnings does the DR have? None. Neither the Dominican nor the US authorities have established that the deaths are related somehow. I'm not asking you to trust blindly in what I say because I'm Dominican and I know how things are in my country, but at least wait for formal reports and not jump into conclusions.
I had a wonderful wedding in the Dominican Republic, half of my guests were visiting from the US for the first time. They rented cars and traveled the country on their own and had no issues whatsoever. It is easy to freak out while watching the news but it is our call to stick to the facts.
