Ideas Needed- Fill the time if dancing isn't allowed

Kate, on March 10, 2021 at 10:25 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 7

Hi all,

My wedding is in Buffalo, New York on July 10, 2021. I was already rescheduled from July 11, 2020, so I'm not looking to move my wedding date again. New guidelines are going into effect on March 15, 2021 in New York State for weddings and there is a real chance that I won't be able to have a cocktail hour (no eating/drinking/mingling beyond sitting at your table) and there will be no dancing other than our first dances. I will absolutely respect whatever guidelines are thrown our way, but I don't want our reception to just be an expensive dinner party where people just leave when they are done eating.

Does anyone have any creative ideas to keep the party going without the usual drinking/socializing and dancing?

Thanks for the help!

If there is no dancing, guests chat and mingle. Guests actually do enjoy that over games and other filler.

I would think that July is going to be VERY different than March, but a back up plan isn't the worst idea.

Games, trivia, maybe little stations with stories from your time together/pictures.

And, as Michelle says, people will be *thrilled* to talk in person.

Sadly there may still be regulations for that in place. Currently you aren't really allowed to mingle with anyone outside of your immediate family or outside of your assigned table.

    The struggle is so real.

Thanks! I'm absolutely hoping for restrictions to ease up a bit before July, but it is so tough to tell what will happen even 4 weeks from now!

Hey, also a NY bride and fh and I basically planned our wedding with the restrictions from last year in mind so if push came to shove and restrictions tightened again, well we were already prepared and planned for it. So we are doing a photo montage during dinner which I think guests will like and then we have decided to spread out the special dances instead of having them back to back to better fill out the evening. We’re doing a open section for speeches and toast since it’s a more intimate wedding, and we’re doing the newlywed game but making it more like a game show with guests participation, we’re also putting out a lot of wedding puzzles, like wedding mad libs, wedding word search, wedding bingo and for the bingo we are giving small prizes to the first 3 winners. This is our plan for a no dancing wedding. We know the governor loosened those restrictions, but if things with cases spike this month and next month, then the upcoming weddings will suffer the tighter restrictions so we’ve been planning as of dancing will not happen. That won’t be something we know until literally the week of the wedding with things changing so frequently. We have considered investing in large lawn games like the giant jenga and connect four but they are very pricey so that’s still a big maybe.

Karaoke ,classic board games tables including cars games, lawn games if you're having and outdoor reception , hire a singer or a band ,only to watch and listen to them: a kind of concert-like event (but people would remain seated due to covid), if you're having speeches/toasts you can ask more people to give one and/or ask them to give a longer speech/toast than what originally planned (especially for those who're planning to give a funny one), you can set up a lounge area (give priority to elders/seniors and women-girls who'will be wearing high heels),craft/DIY projects stations( perfect for those who love DIY stuff).

Fellow Buffalo bride 2 weeks after your date. Came here to get some ideas too! I’m hoping July will look a lot different from current but just in case.
