Ideas for a "New England" favor?

About to be Mrs. Nic, on April 7, 2014 at 7:28 PM Posted in Planning 0 18

My ceremony venue & my reception venue are both very "New England-y."

Ceremony - an old white Church near a marina

Reception - an old industrial style boat factory/mill.

I wanted to do an edible favor along the New England vibe. I was thinking salt water taffy but I'm open to whatever. Any ideas?

One of my friends went to a wedding where they gave out Old Bay Seasoning. That's very New England. Salt water taffy would be great too.

I have seen lobster lollipops. To me, nothing says New England like lobsters!

Love the lobster lollipops. Something with cranberry is great too. Also got "sea glass" candies at a wedding on cape last fall, which were cute.

There's a place in Maine that makes all sorts of candy for wedding favors...like hand painted lobster chocolates. They look amazing. I think it's called havens. They can ship to you too.

I'm ordering fresh made salt water taffy from there.

    Mini boston cream pies?

i understand a lot of the items that you have named are now considered "New England" but I know being a visitor of New England, I would never associate whoopie pies (PA Dutch) Salt water taffy (NJ Shore) or Old Bay (Baltimore Harbor) with anything New England.

I would say if you went with Vermont or Maine maple products you would be set

    @Nicole and Mike:

Pennsylvania, Maine, and New Hampshire all claim to be the birthplace of the Whoopie pie. In 2011, the Maine State Legislature considered naming the whoopie pie the official state pie. The proposal received bipartisan support. L.D. 71, officially known as "An Act to Designate the Whoopie Pie as the State Dessert", read "The whoopie pie, a baked good made of two chocolate cakes with a creamy frosting between them, is the official state dessert".[7] The Pennsylvania Dutch Convention & Visitors Bureau[8] and other observers in Lancaster County, PA, note that the whoopie pie comes from the area's Amish and Pennsylvania German culture – origins that are unlikely to leave an official paper trail – and has been handed down through generations.[9] Most likely, Amish groups that migrated to Maine brought the treat to the people of Maine[citation needed]. Mainers assert that Labadie's in Lewiston, Maine has been making the confectionery since 1925.[10] The now-defunct Berwick Cake Company of Roxbury, Massachusetts had been making the "Whoopee Pie" since 1931 and it is also claimed that the whoopie pie originated there in Massachusetts and spread both north and south. It appears though that German immigrants brought the predecessor of the Whoopie Pie to communities throughout the northeast.[11]

The Maine Legislature eventually decided to declare the whoopie pie the official state treat, and chose blueberry pie (made with wild Maine blueberries) as the official state dessert.[5]

Crystal- I was only saying that i would not automatically assume that a whoopie pie is a new england thing, As an outsider visiting New England, it would make more sense to see maple, seafood (probably not for a wedding favor though), concord grapes, cranberries, blueberries, Dels Frozen lemonade, dunkin donuts, many of the country's best breweries, among other things.

If the guests are also from New England, I'm sure a whoopie pie would make more sense to fit the theme than someone coming from outside of the area.

I'm from New England born and raised and Old Bay definitely makes me think Baltimore. I would go with something maple or something lobster or leaf shaped. There are a lot of candies and sweets that are specific to the New England area too such as Needhams.

@Nicole- I learned that info when I lived in Boston because a friend was from Maine and another from Pennsylvania and they argued about where it was from. I only posted it as something interesting to read, not to be mean or say you were wrong. People in New England consider it a New England thing.

Old Bay is actually Maryland. I love the lobster lollipop idea. Seriously, it really doesn't get any better than this...
