Icing flowers vs. real flowers for cake

Brittany, on June 13, 2019 at 9:17 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 11
Hey everyone! We are having our cake with flowers on it. Originally, I spoke with our florist about having real flowers on the cake. When we had our tasting though, my mom was adamant about having the flowers be made of icing. I’m not sure why, but ever since then she has asked me daily if I’ve talked with the caterer about getting the flowers made of icing. I’m thinking of telling her a good reason why we shouldn’t do the flowers in icing. I feel bad because my parents are paying for the wedding and so far have let us choose everything. I have a feeling though when the day comes she won’t even think about the flowers on the cake. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance!

I wanted buttercream flowers on our cake... but icing flowers of any kind get expensive FAST. We ended up with a kind of mock-buttercream flowers (I wanted everything on my cake to edible and delicious).

Point is if it's just a look that you're going for real flowers are probably a better option (especially if that's what you want.) Don't worry about having a "good reason" your vendors work for you, stick to what you want.

We're doing royal icing flowers, but our cake was included in the venue package and buttercream or royal icing flowers were within that. Sugar flowers are more expensive I believe.

At the end of the day I don't think what flowers on the cake will be remembered, so go with what you'd like or is the better option for your budget

We’re doing icing flowers bc then we don’t have to worry about coordinating getting flowers for the cake, getting them to the baker, etc etc. it was just more headache to deal with.

I never realized that icing flowers would actually be more expensive than real ones! I haven’t had my cake consultation yet, but I’m debating between real flowers and icing flowers too...something kinda like these two pictures. If real ones are actually cheaper (who knew?!) I’ll probably go that route.

In that style, real flowers 110% the icing flowers don’t have the same look.
The flowers on our cake were sugar or fondant. So that’s another option

I am a personal fan of real flowers. Has your mom specified why she is adamant about icing flowers? I would just explain to her that you really love the look of real vs fake and the fake ones are more costly. See what she rebuttals with.

What is more expensive? Icing flowers take SO much time as opposed to the florist just ordering flowers that she's already getting you and are typically the leftovers or just part of the bushel. I haven't met a bakery that says icing flowers don't make the cake decor pricing go up.

I had buttercreme flowers-but my cake was included in the venue price. The flowers came out beautiful though. I think it's a personal preference..maybe keep looking around at photos and show her what you like about the real flowers

We're doing real greenery on our cake. When I showed our florist what we were looking for she said it was no problem and only added $5 to our invoice.
