I contacted our venue today with the question of if we have to postpone our wedding this year, can we postpone, and if so what dates do they have left? She emailed back and said they only have September 25th left for 2021. Our venue normally books two years out. We want to hold out hope for August, we live in Vermont and our Governor is starting to opening things back up slowly. I'm afraid if we wait a month or so to make our decision, that date will be taken and we'll have to wait two years. Our hearts are set on our venue, and I'm purchased a lot of venue specific decorations, so we don't want to change venues.

We've reached out to our bridal party, parents, and our close friends. We're about 50/50, half saying everything should be fine, and half saying they understand postponing for safety. We're both torn with what to do...

Honestly, I think it's really unlikely you'll be able to do that in August with no hiccups and/or some serious precautions in place that might just not be the vibe you want for your wedding. Different parts of the country are having outbreaks at different rates, so even if things were good in Vermont, they could be really bad in any of those other areas at any time. 168 guests plus you and your FH, plus your vendors and service staff means you're looking at probably 180 people total, so that would require that gatherings of up to 180-200 people would be permitted. Depending on your venue size and capacity, it may also be that gathering sizes aren't an issue but social distancing is. So a space with an occupancy for 200 guests may only be able to accommodate 100 if 50% capacity limits are in place, or even less if tables need to be spaced apart and guests seated in smaller groups. Figure out what you absolutely refuse to compromise on (your guest list, the venue, the timeframe in which you are married) and that can help you decide.

I think chatting with family and guests is smart - you may find that there are a lot of people who are really looking forward to your event and want it to happen but feel nervous about the situation and wouldn't feel completely comfortable attending. I'd also factor in if you have older guests or guests with risk factors, as well as whether your venue is indoors or out (generally it seems that the virus doesn't transmit as well in outdoor settings due to environmental factors, plus I think people just feel more comfortable interacting with other people in open air environments as opposed to confined spaces right now).

I would take the new date. We are also set for August 2020 and if we had the option to secure a Saturday date for 2021 now we would jump on it. Our venue isnt allowing us to switch yet so we have to wait it out. I am envious that you have the option to be honest. I am 80% sure out August wedding wont happen as planned- and we are in Canada where covid-19 isn't nearly as pervasive as in the US.

This is hard! If they will hold the date through the week, I would reach out to close friends and family and get their input. Will you have guests who are unable/unwilling to travel in August? I’m an overly cautious person so I would probably move it just for the piece of mind. Hard for me to say when I’m not in your position- can’t imagine another year plus of anticipation for your big day. Know that it will be worth it whenever it happens!
