So my fiancé and I want a wedding on the beach, we live about 3-4 hours from the nearest beach, originally we were thinking to have the ceremony on the beach with only close friends and family and the reception close to home for everyone else but we’d have to stretch it out over the whole weekend and now we’re thinking ceremony on the beach and reception in a hotel nearby where people will be staying all on the same day. We can’t afford accommodations for everyone in a hotel but we are thinking about asking for no gifts and letting people pay for their own hotel instead. All we know for sure is that we want the ceremony on the beach and I’ve got 6 months to make that happen!

So basically you will be having a destination wedding... it should be fine if you do it all the same day, not fair for people to attend your ceremony only, specially if they have to drive far or flight to get there.. just let everyone know about the accommodations and say is a destination wedding.. people know that means they pay for their own things like that..

It would be considered a destination wedding. Guests would normally pay for their own lodging, that is not an expense you would be responsible for. What you are responsible for is some kind of reception after the wedding with food and beverages at no cost to the guests. It's up to you if feel like you'd still like gifts or not but if you're only worried about asking for gifts because you can't afford to pay for lodging, you're in the clear. It's ok to register.

You're not responsible for anyone's accommodations for your wedding. Just do the ceremony and reception in the same area on the same day.

I didn’t even know about calling it a “destination wedding” so thank you! And I suppose we will still register, I thought asking people to pay for they’re own hotel would be asking too much

Yes it would be a destination wedding but please do not mention gifts, anywhere. It is considered tacky to mention them. Best wishes!

I would have it on the beach with a reception on or near the beach. If you’re planning it with the mindset of a destination wedding, even though it’s not super far, you will have some more flexibility in what beaches and venues to look at. Congrats and good luck!

We did exactly this! We got married in San Diego which is 4ish hours from where we live. We just booked a block of rooms and sent out Save The Dates, so everyone could have a idea of where the wedding would be. Everyone paid for their own room, and we made sure they had great food and alcohol at the reception. Everyone loved it!!!
