So bought dress December 2019, supposed to be married September 2020. Got backyard married, didn't wear dress and postponed everything to August 2021. Well something in me snapped last July and I decided to finally do something about my weight. I have lost a total of 30lbs so far and am on track to lose another 5-10 before the wedding. I bought my dress in a size 14, I am now a size 8-10. I expect to be closer to a size 6-8 by the time of my wedding. It didn't cross my mind until this past weekend that my dress might not be able to be altered that small. So now I'm going in to an alteration shop to get their opinion.

Don't get me wrong I am soooo happy about my body and weight now but...I got a $2,000 dress that I definitely will not be able to get my money back and I signed a contract saying that I understand that I cannot return the dress which at the time why would I think I would need to return it lol.

Also if I do need to buy a new dress, I have a little under 6 months to the wedding and it is a time crunch! If anyone has had to get their dress resized that dramatically and it worked let me know! I want to see if other people were able to get it done.

First off, congratulations on your weight loss! That is amazing.

Secondly, I think a seamstress will be able to bring it in and make it work. If your dress has a lot of detailing, I would expect to lose a fair amount of that. But again, a professional seamstress should be able to make it work.

Congrats on your weight loss journey! Your seamstress can do amazing things! I was 240 pounds when I bought my dress. I lost 50, got a tummy tuck & liposuction- my seamstress did amazing work! It can be done! I plan on losing 5 more pounds by my wedding on 4/3/21 but that won’t dramatically change anything.

No advice on the drastic resizing, but wanted to say congrats on the weight loss AND give you hope that you will be able to find another dress in a short time frame if needed. I got my dress off StillWhite and was able to find a dress I loved that fit well without any alterations needed, and from the time I decided I wanted it to the time I was able to try it on was maybe a week or two at most. It took me a lot longer to find shoes than a dress.

Congrats on the weight loss! I would also love to hear your weight loss journey and what you did to achieve those results! Smiley smile

Alterations on the dress should be doable since you are taking it in, however, depending on the dress structure you may lose the proper design of the dress. If that doesn't work for you, you may have to buy a new dress that is off the rack.

So my advice is stop and breathe. Congratulations on the weight-loss! That is a huge achievement! Just make sure you talk to your tailor and ask how much they can take in the dress. I am sure you can find one who will be able to do it, just know that it might cost you a larger amount in alterations than you were expecting.

Taking in a dress that many sizes might involve taking the dress apart, recutting it, and then sewing it back up. You might need to reach out to a few different places to find someone who is able to do the work.

Thank you! I started Intermittent Fasting and lowered my caloric intake. That's it! Cut down to only 1200 calories a day, and I started out eating between 12pm-8pm but now I eat between 4pm-8pm.

I’m also doing that as well! I’ve been eating between 12pm-6pm. I’ve lost 15lbs and now I feel like my progress has slowed down. I’m think I’ll try cutting out the extra 2 hours and see how that goes! Thanks for sharing!

Congrats on the weight loss. That’s amazing and you should be proud of yourself!
I would try and get quotes from a local seamstress as PP pointed out.
Hopefully you can get it taken in without paying a fortune. Otherwise I’d try to resell (I know it sucks to not get your money back) and buy another dress you love off the rack. There are a few online retailers that have try at home options. I do hope the first option will work for you since you clearly loved that dress.

Congrats! That's amazing! I'm a theatre major and worked in the costume shop for work-study. It should be possible to resize the amount you need. The less detailed the dress the easier it will be to resize it. It might get expensive but, my guess is it won't be the same price as a whole new dress. One thing I do love is corset backs as they can be tightened or loosened depending on your current size. (Though seem-ripping zippers was the bane of my existence in college Smiley xd ) Good luck!

Hey Sara! Congrats!!! I am in the exact same situation with almost the same priced dress. My wedding is a month after yours!! I am afraid of not being able to alter or the price. We already paid the $2k so it would seriously suck to chuck out more money or have it not look right. I hope it all works out for you!
