I hated my makeup trial! Anyone else??

Pinkuin, on February 24, 2014 at 11:17 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 17

I had a super bad experience with my first makeup trial. I was told airbrush makeup is amazing and has great coverage, so I wanted to try it. Well what she did on me didn't look good at all. There was barely any coverage (the equivalent to tinted moisturizer), it didn't even last an hr, and the rest of the makeup wasn't anything special (since i usualy wear a lot of makeup on a daily basis so Im pretty familiar with application). And it cost me $100!!! She even wiped off my eyes and redid them when I didn't like it, but just did the exact same thing over again. I was there for 2 hrs so I just left and redid my own makeup for my engagement photos Smiley sad Now I'm not sure if I should "shop" makeup artists and drop $100 every time bc that seems to be the norm around here (Austin, TX).

Has this happened with anyone? How are you picking/did you pick your MUA? I am pretty sad and nervous that I won't like it the day of!

I'm DIYing my makeup. I don't want anyone else to touch my face because I'm very particular.

As someone else who always wears a lot of make up I made sure I intentionally looked for make up artists who did a lot of heavier make up/smokey eye....which isn't the norm in wedding make up..so it took me a while... I found the perfect make up person who luckily included the trial in her prices.

There is a thread somewhere on here from earlier today about air brush make up where a make up woman actually commented and explained the difference about how literally both can be just as good or bad if you arnt using someone who knows what they're doing.

I personally really like normal make up so I didn't need the air brush and my regular make up came out perfect for my trial.

Just keep looking, find someone with the exact style you want. Read reviews on wedding wire or the knot.

If you are used to putting on a lot of makeup then you are probably the best person to do it. I myself do a "full face" every single day as part of my routine so I already know how I want to look. I think a lot of MUA's for weddings go in assuming you do NOT wear or do not want to wear a lot of makeup so they don't go full runway on the bride for that reason.

I think you all are totally right, I've considerd DIY'ing but THAT would be the day I would get too nervous and totally smudge eye liner and mascara all over myself and then have to re-do it 8x and show up with a red face and puffy eyes lol - im too scared to risk it! the makeup artist is actually really great I think, her website looks amazing but just didn't look right on me at all... :9 @Jennifer, I think you're right in that they assume you don't know anything about makeup so you'll be too shocked if they go full force

I wasn't a fan of my original trial - just the eyes, so I went back to retry them, my MUA didn't charge me again. The trial was $40, the day of was $75. I would almost shop around, I feel like its a lot of pressure to put on yourself to have to do your own make up the day of, unless you really feel up to it!

    Good Luck! Smiley smile

I knew the MUA I would hire for quite a while before I even got engaged. I would suggest asking for a portfolio or pictures of their work before committing to even a trial.

I didn't like my trial either. I hated the airbrush mainly. So we decided to use mineral makeup instead. Since I didn't like the first trial, I get my second trial for free. I would think that most MUAs would offer a free second round if you are unhappy with the first.

I've never even heard of airbrush make up. I've only heard of the airbrushing tool on PhotoShop. That's how little I apply/know about make up. I don't wear make up on a regular basis.

That being said, I'm similar to Jesse's Girl only I knew which hair stylist I would be hiring LONG before getting engaged. She partners with a make up artist, and if she trusts him, then so do I. I've also already been in close contact with him regarding what I'm looking for, etc. So, we're on the same page.

Keep looking. This person just may not be who you need. See a crap ton of pics before committing to anymore trials so you can avoid that cost.

I went through 3 makeup people until finally a friend asked one of her friends who works as MAC to do it!

I did 3 make up trials with my MOH before figuring out what exactly looked and photographed best.

Yikes ok looks like there's no easy answer! Will keep shopping around. I saw tons of pics and she's done celebrities and stuff, so I thought it would be a no brainer and she would knock it out of the park. Not so much. I don't feel like going back to her though, after spending 2 frustrating hrs and not liking the result.

My friend who is a great hair stylist is doing my hair and she didn't know anyone in my area to recomment, so I guess it's back to shopping! Didn't have "makeup trials" in the original budget lol all these unexpected expenses!!!

Airbrush is really natural , its beautiful but not really for someone that for even daytime wears heavy makeup. Im doing mine myself because I never like anything someone else does on me

My MUA is a friend of mine and I have no qualms whatsoever telling her what I want. Most importantly, I want her to get my fake eyelashes on right. That's the part I have trouble with. She knows me well, so I'm sure she'll do a great job. We're doing a trial in a few months. I'm really looking forward to it.
