I found my dress! Alteration questions?

Melody, on November 10, 2016 at 1:56 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 16

I got this dress on a local facebook page in my area. It's the first wedding dress i've ever tried on but it is exactly what I wanted, and I cant believe how well it fits! Originally it had an open back, which is what I wanted, but the girl I got it from had it altered to add the mesh back piece. She decided to go with a different dress entirely because she changed her venue, so she never even ended up using this one. I want to have it altered back to how it was originally without the mesh back. Has anyone had alterations like this done before with making the back open? How much did you pay?

Thanks everyone!

Can you not just cut the mesh out yourself? Are you wanting to remove the mesh from in between the lace on the back also?

Yes thats the lace piece i'm taking about that is over the back. I cant do it myself because it it attached underneath the lace straps and I don't want to risk cutting something thats holding it all together.

I don't understand why she would have done that, it is such a beautiful dress without the mesh!

I don't have any real advice except to take it to a seamstress and see what they say! I wouldn't cut anything myself.

I don't know much about alterations, but I can't see it being very expensive to remove the mesh. The structural integrity of the dress will still be there because it wasn't supposed to have the mesh, so it shouldn't be a problem.

@MelodyM Ah, ok. That should be a very easy fix that shouldn't cost too much. Try calling the local bridal shop (even if you didn't buy it there) and ask them if they have a seamstress that they recommend.

Definitely take the mesh out! Open backs are #hearteyes

You might be able to cut it yourself, maybe take to a seamstress first to get their opinion before you hack on it?

I am a seamstress. If you brought the dress to me I would find the seam that holds the mesh to the dress (the new seam) and remove it with a seam ripper and/or small scissors. I would work on the inside of the dressThe trick is only cutting the threads of the seam. Its not a big risk to do it your self. Almost anything can be fixed on a dress.

Thank you everyone for the suggestions, and kind comments! I will take it to a seamstress/alterations since I don't trust myself lol.

It looks so beautiful on you! I work at a bridal shop and I've seen our seamstresses do stuff like this all the time, so yes, it can be done. It may be pricey. But it can be done. But alterations vary wildly by region.
