I don't want a bridal shower- Negative Reaction from mom

andeejai, on April 17, 2014 at 12:07 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 15

I did not think it was that serious! I do not want a bridal shower. I told my mom and she freaked out. She said I can't get married without a bridal shower. WHAT???!!!

I have never heard of this. She compared it to a baby shower. But I was like whether the mom has a baby shower or not, she is still going to have the baby... so are you saying if the mom decides NOT to have a baby shower, then that baby is not going to arrive??? WTH kind of logic is that? I also asked her what rule said that it's mandatory to have a bridal shower. She frowned and said okay, well good, I can save my money then. Wth! Why is she bent out of shape, GEEZ!!!

Has anyone else not have a bridal shower? Any negative reactions?

I wasn't going to have a bridal shower but one of my friends really wanted to throw one for me so I gave in. Maybe your mom really wanted to plan one or was already starting to plan one when you told her?

I'm the same as Jenn. I'm unsure about it because I have more than my friends and it feels awkward to ask them to shower me. It's not that I don't need stuff, it's just I feel guilty...

I think the issue is she was excited to plan one (or attend one) for you. It IS tradition, however, that doesn't mean you MUST have one.

I told my MOH that I'd prefer to have a "no gifts" get-together with a bunch of friends and family over a shower, and FH and I felt guilty about registering for things. She explained that people genuinely enjoy doing that stuff for a new couple and asked me to reconsider.

I understand your not wanting to have one. I'm not big on being the center of attention and in a way I'm kind of dreading my shower...the idea of sitting in front, everyone watching as I open gifts. Just awkward.

But it means a lot to your friends and family (mom especially) to be able to plan the shower for you and share in that moment. If I were you I'd consider letting her plan it. It might not be a big deal to you but it obviously is to her- maybe you can compromise by asking that the guest list be limited to family and VERY close friends, or that she throws you a "luncheon" rather than a shower so that there wouldn't be gifts involved.

I'm not having a bridal shower, it's not really common for my culture. Also, I've lived with my guy for 2 years and we don't need that much stuff anymore. So if you don't want a bridal shower, don't have one.

I'm not having one and I think my family and friends were surprised. The topic has come up several times and I've been adamant each time. I think they want to "do" something nice and that's very sweet but I'm not into it. If you're adamant that you don't want one, stand your ground. If you are ok with giving in, then do it. I mean, it's a nice thing and they want to do it. Your mom wants to do that for you, (although family really isn't supposed to throw showers for the bride).

For me, I just can't let anyone do that. It would be sooo awkward because of my age. Just...NO.

I'm not having one. And so so so pleased that I'm not. But no one really cared that I wasn't having one. To me it was a big deal not to have one and that matters just as much, actually no, more than other people

If you don't want one then don't.

That's the thing, she was not planning one for me... My BM's were going to, but I said I am ok without one and the girls respected my wishes.

We didn't have one. No one in our families expected us to have one and im sure my side of the family doesn't even know what a bridal shower is. All of our family is spread out across the east coast and we recently moved to a different state so none of our friends live here. People are already paying a lot of money to come to our wedding and we are not expecting (or wanting) gifts from people.

I do not want one either - I honestly do not see the point. I do not have a lot of friends and the only two females I am close with live out of state now and would not be able to come. My FMIL mentioned about a month ago that she would throw me a shower and this wave of dread came over me. I would feel super awkward if it was her and my FH's sister and his aunts/cousins that I barely know and only see on Christmas. It is not like we have conversations other than the standard "hi, how are yous" so I would feel weird if I was given gifts by these people. FH could not even remember his cousins name last Thanksgiving, but I know my FMIL would invite these people to a shower for me (talk about really awkward). I flat out told my mom not to throw me one because I would much rather go out to lunch with her, grandma, and my two aunts on my side of the family. If they get up in arms about it I will be thankful and gracious, but it is honestly something I would hate.

I do not want a shower. My mom was not happy. I eventually caved. Its the only time she will get to help throw a bridal shower. But i did NOT let FMIl throw me a shower. First i never heard of having two showers, even if there is a distance between the families, second I don't really want the one I am having, and third, she has two daughters.

I didn't have a shower, nor did I want one. Like many ladies here, I just don't see the point, we have everything we need - we have a house together and I don't think that guests would shower me with the stuff that I really want which are copper pots and they cost a boatload!

I honestly didn't want one. But I am the only girl of my parents and FH parents. My mom was really excited about it. Plus we are building a house so I was ok with getting stuff to fill it with. But I felt so awkward at it. I am very shy and hate being the center attention. Opening presents just felt weird. And I felt like I was ungrateful no matter how many times I said thank you. I'm glad I had it for my families sake. But I would have been ok without it.

I loved mine. I'm not a big fan of being the center of attention, but my cousins did a lovely job and my favorite people were there, so I had a good time.

If I may ask, why are you adamantly against one?

Oh my God it's like reading my own story! My godmother just called to tell me she wanted to throw me one and didn't take no for an answer. She sprung it on me less than two months from my wedding and now I'm freaking out. I have enough to worry about! I don't need to try to find another free weekend to drive up for one just to be awkward and uncomfortable all day!
