i can’t fit my dress!!!!!

Bryanna, on September 26, 2019 at 7:24 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 7
So i finally picked up my dress last month and I’m kind of freaking out because it’s definitely too small. The salon I purchased my dress from originally offered full service which I purchased because it seemed super convenient! Well fast forward to the day I picked up my dress I arrived to be informed the shop will be closing it’s doors and no longer offers full service (in house alterations). They refunded me the cost but that didn’t bother me until I tried the dress on. As she was buttoning the dress I started freaking out because I felt it getting tighter and tighter!!!! 😩 She was extremely nice about it telling me “I’m sorry honey your rib cage is too large it does not fit.” You can imagine my pain! I asked how could this happen when they measured me beforehand and I know I haven’t gained any weight. She then tells me they don’t measure the “rib cage” area. I’m so stressed! She also informed me it would be much harder/more expensive to be taken out than being taken in. I haven’t reached out to any alterations shops at this time (my wedding in April 26th 2020). Do you guys have any suggestions? What diets worked best for you? Workout routines? Would just suck it up and see how much alterations would cost? Or if it could even be done?

I'd suck it up and find out alteration pricing, dieting isn't the easiest when stressed and if you're not disciplined... it'll fall through and then you'll really not have anything. Plus, you should work out as well. I'd at least get quotes and see the absolute latest that you could bring it to each place, to get an idea... if you are dead set on trying dieting.

Not only will you get an idea on price but you'll get an idea on if they can find similar fabrics rather than panicking last minute.

I ordered way over size by at least 4 - 6 because I knew it was easier to take in than to find any fabric. It's unfortunate that they didn't suggest that for you when you initially bought it and now they can't even remedy the situation... I'd almost say to return it, but I know it can be hard if you think it's the one.

I would check into alterations so you don't stress yourself out, especially since the excuse she gave is BS. A good shop measures EVERYTHING. I used to work for a tuxedo/bridal shop. We measured everything and would encourage brides to not order dresses in a smaller size so they didn't stress.

Yeah I’ve been trying to diet and lose weight for about 3 weeks now. I’m doing pretty good but I’ve only lost 2lbs 😩 I said I would give myself until the end of the year to see my progress but I’m thinking now I should just take in for alterations. The sooner I get this handled the better I’ll feel for sure!

I was thinking the same thing when they measured me, but I’ve never been measured for anything before. I assumed she knew her job better than me. I’m definitely going to take it in for alterations!

You're wedding is a day after mine! Thankfully you have plenty of time to lose some weight if that's the route you want to go.

I use to work at a bridal boutique so if you decide to go the alterations route plan to be in alterations 6-8 weeks. I'm personally not taking my dress in for alterations until early February.

Depending on how soon you take in your dress & how much alts you need (besides sides out) expect to pay around $300 [this would include hem, bustle & sides out]. A good seamstress should be able to buy you 2 inches (but this also heavily depends on the structure of your dress). If you need more than 2 inches you might have to purchase additional fabric.

BUT you got time girl! Dont stress (: you got this!

Find another alteration place. Even if you lose the weight, you will likely need some alterations so it fits and hangs perfectly. You will start fittings closer to the date, but you should def get on this asap. Better to be safe than sorry.

Thanks a lot! Smiley smile I needed to hear that! My fiancé tells me all the time “We’ve got plenty of time” but he even looked nervous we I initially told him I couldn’t fit it! He never gets nervous lol. I will continue to work out just for myself m, no pressure. And if that doesn’t work I will for sure take it to alterations before it’s too late. Hope for the best, plan for the worst!
