i am in a bit of a pickle.....

Mrs. C, on May 2, 2019 at 11:59 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 38

So my boss is throwing a little party for me at work and I found out today what food they got catered. The last time I ate this food I got DEATHLY ill. Like the worst food poisoning I have EVER had. I am 2 days out from my wedding. I don't want to be rude but I am SO afraid of getting sick again. Should I eat it or not?
HELP!!!

It sounds like the obvious answer is no.

This doesn't really seem like a debate to me. Is there any way you can just eat before? Or eat certain things and not others? I know sometimes at parties people will set out other snack-type things that probably did not come from the same place as the rest of the food.

I would absolutely avoid eating it if it has a history of making you sick. If you can eat before, probably do that but if you can't just prepare to not eat after unless you are able to snack a little bit on food other than the food that made you sick!

Is it the type of food or is it from that specific caterer that you got sick?

I'm sure they will have some pretzels or chips, etc. Put those on your plate if you want it to look like you're eating. If they try to force you to eat something from the catered food, just say oh "XYZ makes me bloat" or something lol.

It is the only thing they will be having food wise from my understanding. And I feel like it will be extremely rude

It will be the only foods they have at the party. I am not sure how I can not eat it without being rude.

Just socialize without eating. IF anyone asks why you aren't eating, say you are "watching your figure" until the wedding.

Specific caterer. I am almost certain it was underdone chicken. But when I ate previously I also ate side items too so I cant be sure what actually caused it out of the food items.

I probably wouldn't risk it two days until your wedding. It's not super likely you will get sick from it again, but I'd just beware. Maybe stick to snacky stuff - like rolls, finger foods, etc that are hard to undercook/ruin. If they ask, just tell them you're really cautious of what you're eating these final days so your dress fits 100%!

Thats a good idea! I am not sure what all the side items they will have I just know it will all be from this specific caterer which still makes me uneasy.

Ouch, that's a tough one. Food poisoning can take over 12 hours to hit you though, did anyone else get sick from it back when you did?

You can either try and eat more of the safe food items (as in not prepared) or thank everyone graciously and just not eat any of it. If anyone asks why just say you're on a strict diet before your wedding so you don't bloat etc.

Can you politely ask them to have something else catered or is it a done deal? If the chicken is the culprit because it’s undercooked (yikes!) & it’s not mixed with side dishes, maybe you can just eat sides.
Is the party supposed to be a surprise, because if yes, I would just say I just ate & I’m so full.
If they will have some dessert then you can say that you really feel like eating something sweet & stick to that 😃
Or as pp suggested say you’re being super careful about eating these days because of the dress / bloating 🤷🏻‍♀️

I am debating about eating the side items. When I did get sick, I got the brunt of it. I went out to this place with my best friend (and bridesmaid) and her husband a few years ago. She and her husband ended up getting sick from it as well but not nearly as bad as I did. I got a different type of chicken on the menu seasoned differently than they did. Which again makes me think the chicken was the culprit.

No its a done deal. It is not a surprise they sent out an email to our whole faculty and staff in our group. Yeah I might try side items but avoid the chicken.

If anyone asks just claim that you’re on a strict diet going into the wedding.

Ahhhh ha. I see. So it wasn't from a catered event but their restaurant.
I would just carefully pick and choose what to eat. Avoid the chicken. I doubt anyone will be noticing you not eating much as from my experience most times there us an "office party" people are just more interested in chowing down on free food. But as I mentioned, if someone does say something, just mention your strict diet so close to wedding time.

As a picky eater I often put a little of this and that on my plate. Move it around a lot. Break it into smaller pieces. Get rid of the plate and pretend I'm stuffed.
If anyone says you hardly ate anything, just say you're on a lighter diet til the wedding is over.

Oh boy... Yes, I would avoid chicken, you don’t need the risk. Just put sides on your plate & pretend you’re nibbling 😆 And then dive into dessert, if they have any lol.

I totally agree with this. I wouldn’t eat it for sure! If you were to get the stomach flu, you would feel it the morning of your wedding. Just bring your own lunch and say you are dieting.
