Hyphenated last name

Sadie, on July 7, 2020 at 11:20 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 10
Hi everyone! I have a question. My fiance has a hyphenated last name. Is it legal to just take one part of his last name? I heard it isn't, but I can't find anything online about this.

I’m assuming you would have to take their full name as that is the person you married and what is documented.

It depends on the state, but in most places you can change your name to literally whatever you want when you get married. It could be an entirely made up name, so just half of a hyphenated name would also be fine.

You would have to provide the Social Security Administration proof of your identity, like a driver's license, and why you want to change your name, which would be a copy of the marriage license. But, as Caytlyn said, I think you can change it to whatever you want. I would think if it's a portion of your spouse's hyphenated name, they would be fine with it. They just want to be sure that you are who you claim to be before officially changing it.

You could always email the Social Security administration and ask them.

Yes, this is 100% legal, and I personally know 3 people who have done this.

In most states, you can change your name to whatever you want. You can even just make one up if you want to.

My mom actually hyphenated her last name with my step dad's instead of just his full last name (Garcia-Angeles) Garcia is his and Angeles is hers. You can choose what ever you want Smiley smile

Probably depends on the state how it would work.
I’m in TN. I know a girl that did this. Instead of just going to SS with a marriage certificate she had to petition the judge to change it since she wasn’t changing it to exactly his. He accepted the petition no problem.

You can change your name to whatever you want. It is not illegal. Some states make it harder than others, but no matter what you should be able to have the name you want.

You can petition a court to change your name to anything, but in terms of what you can do with your marriage certificate, it depends on the state. I would call the city or town hall/county office that you're planning to get your marriage license from and ask them. When we went to get ours, they had a list of options that I hadn't been able to find online.
