Hyphenated last name- right/wrong way?

Danica, on September 4, 2018 at 11:11 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 4
I’ve seen people hyphenate their last name where it’s brides last name-grooms last name but also grooms last name-brides last name. Is there a “right” way to do it? Is it just preference? Curious as this is the route I am probably going 🤷🏻‍♀️ Thanks!

    Hey there Danica!!

This is a really interesting question to ask because, up until I read it here, I hadn't even thought about it. The way I've seen it, personally, hyphenated names are usually bride name-groom name, but that's because the bride wants to keep her maiden name and her middle name.

I did some googling and most of what I'm finding says, "you do you." You're creating a new family with your FS and if you want to clean the name slate, then do it how you want. If bride-groom sounds better than groom-bride, then do that. If vice versa, then do that. It's your name, so you get the final say in what you want it to be. Smiley smile

Does your FS plan on changing their last name or just you?

I think it is usually your original name - his name.

I'm scrapping my middle name, making my current name my middle, and then taking his last name. Hyphenation just didn't appeal to me. This way, while I won't really use it, I still have my maiden name hidden in there.

But there is no "right" way. You do whatever works best for you!
