Hyphenated Last Name Help!

KristenRPh, on November 18, 2016 at 11:24 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 12

After getting married next summer, I plan to hyphenate my last name... some friends are asking what my new monogram will be and I don't know what to tell them with a hyphenated name? Any thoughts on this?

My current initials KJM and I would be changing it to KJM-S!

Help please!!

First and foremost, take your full name off your post and just tell us your maiden and married initials. That's for your own privacy. This is a public forum.

Second, I googled "hyphenated name monogram" and a few different options came up. It looks like the makeup of the monogram itself won't change...you just have to add in an extra letter.

Hi Kristen, welcome to WW! Make sure to upload a picture for your avatar (instead of the default icons) so that we can get to know you and tell you apart from all the other posters.

Good tip from @La Grosera - these forums are indexed by google so be careful of your privacy!!

There are a few different options with monograms, and you can really do what you like best! The most common I've seen would be first last last middle, or first last-last middle. You could also just do a 2 letter monogram with both last names!

I originally was going to do this but upon doing some research, I discovered that having a hyphenated last name makes things very complicated at the doctors (pretty much anywhere where people keep files on you). So I've decided to just add his last name to mine.

@KristenRPh Rather than FirstName MaidenName-Surname, I'm just going with FirstName MaidenName Surname

I've been married before, so I'm dropping my ex husbands last name and taking on my FH's last name.

@TheD that's interesting...I would never have thought that there were any states that didn't allow you to change your middle name to your maiden name without going through the courts.

This is why it's important to check your local laws!

Thanks for the help everyone. Seems like the options would be to go with KSM or KMSJ for a monogram? I know this seems insignificant, but someone wants to get me some type of gift and I have no clue the correct way!

I have a hyphenated last name from birth. For monograms or initials, I usually just use the first part of my last name. I know thats not the same for a hyphenated last name through marriage though. I have also had it with both last names and dropping my middle initial.

It is really up to you and what initials you want to appear, since in reality you'll be the person staring at the towel, or whatever it is. The friend who wants to get you a monogrammed gift could ask the people doing the monogramming, they probably have a lot of experience with it.

For a cake topper or stationery, you could use M-S

Are friends asking about a monogram for just you or for the two of you? That would make a difference.
