Hyphen last name

So we get married in October 2021, my fiance has 2 last names, but goes by his main first one, but legally he has 2 last names. So when we get married, do I take both or how does that work?

I think it depends on which state you live in.

I live in California and when we picked up our marriage license we had to sign the “Name Equality Act Form” which gives the bride or groom the option to change their middle and/or last names. But we can only change them to something related to our old names. (For example my friend’s last name is McHatton and her husband’s is Pien. They considered changing both their last names to McPien) Or in California we can choose to not change our names at all.

If you live in California your FH can drop the second part of his last name. And you can change your last name to just the first part of his last name as well to match.

Check with your local county clerk or records office. Or wherever you apply for the marriage license.

I believe in Florida (Where I live) you can pick one. That's what my mother did anyways. Never caused her any problems.
