How would you combine these two cultures?

SoontobeNicoleEstevez, on November 19, 2014 at 3:26 PM Posted in Planning 0 11

I am a NC girl. Lived in a small town surrounded by farms and old plants/factories. Really the land of those grassy field, rockers on the porch and fireflies at night. So I have strong ties to my southern roots. My fiancée is Dominican and is as deep in his heritage as I am with mine. I absolutely hate most Caribbean foods but I don't want such a one sided wedding, Help.

I'd do a mix of Caribbean foods and cocktails in with the hors d'oeuvres; if someone doesn't like one thing, they can have something else!

As a caterer, i did many weddings with vastly different 'sides' of guests. I think it was fun for each side to get to experience new things.

We are mixing two cultures in our wedding, Indian and Barbadian, and we are doing exactly what Celia suggested.

Go with what Celia said. Plus it will introduce everyone to some tasty Caribbean food

I would offer some caribbean food at the cocktail hour, and maybe a steel drum band? I would stick to more traditional dishes during the reception to please the majority of guests.

You could offer a signature drinks, one for each of you - yours could be southern (mint julep anyone?) and his could be a rum-based carribbean drink.

See if there are any culture-specific ceremony rituals or reception traditions he wants to include. I would try to keep a balance of what he feels is important and what you feel is important. Maybe if you stick to your traditions during the ceremony, you can do more of the carribbean thing I suggested above during the cocktail hour for a nice balance. You're right, it definitely should not feel one-sided!

    Edit: more ideas Smiley smile

My weddings is also multi-cultural. fiance is from the south, im latino. most of our guest will be african american, the way im incorporating my culture is with music, hiring a dj who is bilingual and can play latin music as well. I couldve incorporated my culture in the food but theres isnt many caterers that can make good colombian food around here, and we are doing brunch.

Have you ever seen the movie Rachel Getting married? There was a wedding in that movie that did an *awesome* job of combining two wildly different cultures, and if I remember correctly, the husband was Caribbean.

Steel drums are not Dominican, but could be a fun touch. Im also having a multi-cultural event. I am Latina, and FH is half Chinese, Half Italian. We are mixing food and music Smiley smile small touches go a long way. Good luck!!

PS: why dont you ask you FH what would he like to be included? maybe he has some ideas.
