How to word a late invite to the wedding

Sheila, on July 14, 2015 at 9:17 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 5

I am 4 days past the deadline for RSVPs. And I realized that I forgot to invite someone! How do I invite them? I don't really want to send them an invitation just 4 weeks before the wedding (especially with the RSVP card requesting response by July 10th).

What do I do?

I'd call them and say the invitation fell in between my car seat snd console. And you just found it. And are mailing it.

You could also call them as ask if they have received their invitation, say you didn't see their RSVP and then tell them it must have gotten lost in the mail or something, and that you will be sending out a replacement. This actually happened to my parents just last week. They were wondering why they didn't get an invite and the parents asked them if they got their invite, replied no, and were informed they should have. Hope that helps!

Or you could call and tell them the truth. It was an unfortunate accident, they were supposed to be on the guest list, and we're so sorry that we didn't send out the invitation until now. I really don't think you have to lie over an accident.

Yes, the truth. I'm with Elizabeth. Just tell the truth. Why? Because this kind of thing really does happen. It happened when we were sending out invitations to my daughter's wedding. The guest was a dear friend of mine when we lived next door to each other for five years (we were both raising an adolescent daughter and son of the same ages, and we spent many hours strategizing together, lol). We moved and then she moved. We didn't really see each other after that, but we talked on the phone occasionally (life has a way of doing that). It really didn't matter when I last saw her because she had already secured a special place in my heart.

As we were making up the guest list, I told my daughter that I wanted to invite our former neighbor (we were paying for the wedding, so we got a table of our own friends -- coolest table in the room, btw). She said she'd get the address from the guest's daughter on FB. With the insanity of wedding planning, I forgot about the invitation and so did my daughter. When we were doing the seating chart -- a few days before the wedding -- I realized that I hadn't gotten an rsvp from the guest in question. Why? Because we never sent an invitation.

I called her -- immediately. I explained what happened and because we good friends, she totally believed that she wasn't a B-lister, but an A-lister who was a victim of wedding planning stress. She was thrilled to be invited, but at that late date, she said she didn't feel like she should come because she didn't have enough time to budget for a gift. I felt terrible. I told her to deck herself out, plan for an evening of excellent food and drinks, and not to worry about a gift. She was a single mom who did a fantastic job of working full-time and raising two good kids (one still at home at the time) without a dime of child support. She showed up, blinged out from head to toe (just the way I knew she would), had a great time, and even gave my daughter a check. I'm so glad I invited her -- even if it was late.

Invite the guest and tell them that it was oversight. As long as you are reasonably close and they don't believe you'd lie to them, they'll make it if they can. But call them -- don't just send an invitation at this late date.

This happened to us as well! We wanted to invite a good friend of FH's family, who had known FH since he was a little kid, but he had just moved, and we had no idea where he moved to, cause he was staying with a friend while looking for a permanent place. He randomly stopped by FIL's house the other day, and we told him that we were going to send him an invite, but had no idea where to send it to, and we ran home(right down the street), and got him an invite and handed it to him there. He was so excited, and said he wouldn't miss it for the world! Honesty is always the best policy!! =)
