How to tone down a gown?

Grace, on March 12, 2017 at 12:33 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 15

I am in love with my dress, it's gorgeous, but I think I want it toned down just a little. I want it a little less...princessy. It doesn't come in until May and my wedding is in January, so I have plenty of time. Just looking for some ideas! Attaching a stock photo

I love that dress just the way it is... I don't think you should tone if down, especially if that's how it's designed to look. You're the bride so you should look like a princess.

Remove some of the bulk under the skirt? I think it's perfect how it is though.

Why on earth would you want to tone it down?? It's amazing. Pick a different dress, then.

I think I'm having some dress regret, even though I do love this dress. I wouldn't have chosen it otherwise. I just don't want to look like a princess, and I can't exactly afford to pick another dress. I think JuneBride17 has it. I'm just afraid if removing the bulk wouldn't even make a difference with the horsehair handkerchief skirt.

The handkerchief skirt is princess in itself. I don't think there's much you can change in that regard. The dress is beautiful.

It's a gorgeous dress. IMO, it doesn't need toning down. Just don't wear a tiara -- that's the mark of princess bride.

Haha definitely not wearing a tiara! Thanks for the compliments on the dress, everyone! I think I may try to do messier hair and casual makeup if there aren't any alterations I can do

To be honest, I don't really like the sleeves. I think it would look better strapless or with thin straps.

It doesn't look "princess" at all to me. I like it the way it is. Why do you say it's too princess-like? I don't recall any princesses with handkerchief type shirts, am I missing a princess?

I absolutely love the sleeves. They make the dress look so unique. If I didn't buy my dress today, I would almost want to buy the dress from you haha... its the perfect combination of 2 dresses I tried on today. I had such a hard time choosing between them.

The sleeves are a standout feature. It makes your gown unique. There is so much about them that is illusion.

I had a hard time, too, Carrina! Congrats on finding your dress!

Thank you, Rachel! I see you are a florist, what kind of bouquet would you recommend to help "tone down" the dress and make it less glamorous/princessy but still elegant?

I know the slip underneath is what tends to lend to the bulk of the skirt. Try a slip meant for a line instead of the poofier ones meant for ball gowns?

    I'll try that. Thanks, Morganne!
