How to tell guests no shots?

So let me first say we have an open bar. We don't have a problem with people casually drinking for our cocktail hour/reception and we are happy to provide that for them. However, FH and I are concerned about shots. Part of my family is very conservative and will be unhappy there's free alcohol...

So let me first say we have an open bar. We don't have a problem with people casually drinking for our cocktail hour/reception and we are happy to provide that for them. However, FH and I are concerned about shots. Part of my family is very conservative and will be unhappy there's free alcohol served anyways (they're old school and my aunt is a recovering alcoholic so it's a touchy subject). I find shots at a wedding tacky (personal opinion). We want to create a classy wedding atmosphere and people doing shots just doesn't fit our vision. So my question is how do we relate this info to guests? I was going to just let the bartender tell them, but I'm worried people will be pushy towards her. Thoughts?

Let the bartender tell them. Many venues don't allow it. Mine does not. The last wedding I was at was not suppose to but they ended up letting some of us. Me and FH love shots so we talked to the bartender for a while until he finally started making them for us and a few others. He was a little upset when he found out we couldn't have them but he got over it. Make sure u let your bartenders know u don't want anyone to take them.

Hey to each their own! Just in our venue, and with the feel of our wedding, shots would look tacky and way out of place. Thank you for the advice ladies!

This has made me realize that I never asked our venue about this. Needless to say if they don't serve shots we will be finding a new venue!

Agreed, let the bartender handle it. Our venue doesn't allow shots either so it's not uncommon at all!

I wouldn't worry about the bartender-- any bartender worth his or her salt is used to dealing with pushy drunk people-- it's just part of the job.

Our venue doesn't allow it. I just assumed the bartenders would handle it. It never even crossed my mind to *handle* this issue.

Yeah, you don't have to tell them anything. The bartenders will handle it. Our venue didn't allow it (but did allow straight whiskey on the rocks...) and as far as I know there were no protests.

The bartender often tells the guests they can't have shots when they attempt to order. Let the bartender handle it, a lot of venues around here don't allow people to have shots at weddings!

My venue doesn't allow shots. I'd just let the bartender handle it.

As long as the bartenders are pouring, I don't think you'd have a problem. The contract with our venue stated they don't allow them. They also stated that the state law for alcohol, in mixed drinks (1.5 oz. maximum?)

Just have the bartender tell them, blame it on the venue if necessary.

Our venue doesn't allow shots, so I'm sure when (because I know my friends) my friends ask for shots, they will be told they're not allowed.

As it's been said before, leave it to the bartender

"Hi, I would like a tequila on the rocks" Then consume in one large sip.

I love shots. We are having beer, wine, champagne/mimosas, bloody marys, and tequila shots.

Most of my venues don't allow shots, and the bartenders have no problem at all telling guests that they can't have them.

Most venues will not allow shots. The bartenders will be able to handle that for you.
