How to soften ball gown attached petticoat?

Julie, on October 25, 2019 at 6:14 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 8

Hello! I purchased a wedding gown online and while I LOVE it, it looks much poofier in person than on the website. I believe this is likely due to the attached petticoat being wrinkled. I have two questions... Will steaming and/or pressing the gown make it less poofy (I sure hope so!)? Also, how can I soften the attached petticoat? It is scratchy and rough.

This is the gown I purchased is below, along with a link.

It’s probably poofier because you didn’t order that exact dress, JJshouse is an Asian knockoff site that tries to recreate true designer dresses, and that picture is of the real designer dress. I would take it to a seamstress and ask if they can switch it out or what they would recommend.

I think it is poofier because the petticoat wrinkled. I know that JJsHouse is based in several countries overseas and that the company recreates designer dresses. All of the dresses on the website are actually the dresses made by JJs. I know from experience, as I have purchased from the website several different times. I attached another picture of me wearing it.

I think your idea that the petticoat is wrinkled makes a lot of sense. I think the picture comparison is also something to consider -- the model seems to have a long torso with fairly low/narrow hips, and you (hope this is okay to say as an observation?) look like you have a shorter torso and have more hips, which means the poof of the petticoat is hanging straight down further on the model's body than it is on yours, if that makes sense. That is a GREAT dress on you! Kudos to being able to pick such a great dress online!

You observation is absolutely correct! I am 4'11". I have an hourglass figure (I need to tighten the belt on this dress), so big chest and curvy hips. I should have taken a picture of the petticoat and it being wrinkled, but I was totally thinking about what you said, which is that I'm a lot shorter than the model, who is listed as 5'6", which is 7 inches taller than me, as well as having completely different body shapes. I will likely have some of the petticoat removed to make it less poofy.

And thank you! I appreciate it! Smiley laugh

I agree with Megan. I have an Aline dress similar in shape to the one on the model but because I am shorter in both the torso and height, my dress is much poofier than what I thought it would be. My dress now looks more like a ball gown compared to an A-line. I think your dress looks amazing. You can take it in and see what they can do as well as far as making the petticoat softer.

Thank you! I would like it to be more a-line than ball gown. I will have to take it to a professional when the time comes. I was just curious if I could soften the petticoat at all at home.

I would advise against trying to iron or steam your gown yourself. I was going to steam my wedding dress the day before my wedding, but decided to Google it first. I’m so glad I did because the steam can actually melt some materials or make material pucker or leave water stains. So let a professional work their magic. They may use steam as well but they know all the tricks to keep from hurting the dress. Love your dress, btw! I’ve ordered from that site a few times and have always been happy with the outcome.
