How to safely tan without getting tan lines?

John Smith, on January 31, 2020 at 12:13 PM Posted in Fitness and Health 1 17

My father is Irish (I'm 1st gen American on my dad's side) and my mother's heritage is Scandinavian...so I'm relatively pale.

Thankfully, I do tan quite well! My dress is Ivory, so I'd like to develop a nice gradual tan leading up to the wedding (which is in July), but the dress has a deep v-neck and an open back, so I'm not sure how to tan without developing tan lines. My shoulders also tan a lot faster than the rest of my body for some reason. I don't want to do a fake tan in any way and I want to be as safe as possible (melanoma is a concern on my dad's side).

Any suggestions?

There’s no such thing as a safe tan, any change in pigment of your skin is considered damage. If you’re fine with the risks there are tanning beds or just tanning outside. I’m not sure there’s a way to control how evenly your body tans unfortunately. I got a spray tan and loved it but everyone is different.

I know nothing about tanning beds or spray tans as I have always stayed away from that stuff but I am also very pale and started using this. It wasn't as dramatic as a spray tan would probably be but it did keep me from being the same color as my dress LOL! It is a lotion you apply in the shower so it was easy to use and left no residue on any of my clothes.

I have this same issue, but I don’t tan well at all and have an awful Razorback tan line on my back. I am hoping to just tan a little in a tanning bed to help with the difference and try to get a base tan for the honeymoon because I burn soooo easily. I am also planning on getting a spray tan before the wedding to hopefully help with the tan lines

I agree with this. Really tanning in general (bed or outside) isn't ideal for your skin. My dermatologist said burning can be worse, but tanning still isn't great (from a cancer standpoint but also from a wrinkle, sunspots, moles standpoint too). Since you have time, I'd try a spray tan or at home tanning lotion to see if you like the results. I did bed tan prior to our wedding, I tan very easily since I'm Italian, but it's 100% not healthy. If you do want to use tanning beds, turn off the face lights and put sunscreen on your face, and tan in VERY low increments in the beginning (3 minutes, then 5, then see what your results are like) and make sure the tanning salon has good bulbs. But it really won't be "safe".

I have zero experience with spray tans so I think that's why I'm not comfortable with getting one. I'd be scared that it's too dark or uneven or that it would rub off on the dress or come off weirdly while on honeymoon. How was your experience?

    This is amazing! Thank you!

Do you have to be super careful to apply it evenly?

I don't feel comfortable using a tanning bed.

I tend to be active and outside a lot during the summer. I always wear sunscreen but I still tan, especially on my shoulders and back. I'm thinking the best option is just to get a strapless swimsuit and only go out for small increments at a time with sunscreen. I'm not too concerned about being dark, just about being even.

My experience has always been great! But I always go to a place where a person sprays me and makes sure it’s even and the color is exactly what I want. It’s never rubbed off on any of my clothes. If it’s something you’d be interested in I would do a trial months before the wedding to see how you like it.

    Yes that actually sounds perfect!

Did it just fade over time?

No ma'am. It really is super easy. Once you finish your shower. While still in the shower, turn the water off, apply about a dime-nickle sized amount of lotion per section (leg, arm, chest etc) and just rub it on. It will not soak in. Once you are done applying all your sections, get out of the shower and dab yourself dry and done! The only thing I did notice is that if I miss dabbing an area (my mostly forgotten area was the back of my ankle) it will turn a darker shade then the rest of you but you can just wipe it right off if you notice it. I would just go into the bathroom and lightly damn a paper towel and wipe it off the few times it happened. I could tell a difference within a week but it is very gradual so no looking orange or like leather lol

I'm very fair skinned as well and have all the same issues. My dress is a deep-v, low back style, I refuse to go tanning, and am worried about fake tan coming off on my clothes. I actually don't have a problem embracing my fair skin in my dress so don't feel the need to do any tanning at all, but I'm not 100% confident I won't get some color prior to my wedding (May 30) and am worried about having a farmer's tan or really uneven color. We even planned a short getaway to Florida at the end of this month (friends have a family house there and invited us) and I'm semi-petrified of going because I'm so worried about getting tan lines. Going to follow this thread as a back-up plan if I totally end up with lines I need to even out!

Versa spa. get one at zoom tan with a groupon, i paid $17 and it was well worth it. Get one 2 days before your event, I have done this multiple times before events and will definitely do so before my wedding.

You could try an at home sunless tanner a few times before the wedding to get comfortable
