How to preserve dress if you are postponing

Sarah, on June 18, 2020 at 12:03 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 11

My FH and I are considering postponing our Oct 2020 wedding by a full year because of COVID-19 concerns. I just picked up my wedding dress from the boutique and am not sure what to do with the dress if I will not be wearing it for another year.

Will it be ok just sitting in my closet? Or do I need to have it professionally preserved? I have not worn it yet. And if we postpone the wedding, I won't be getting alterations done until a year from now. Would love to hear what other brides in this situation are doing!

I also don't think it should yellow or anything in a year, so i think it will be fine as long as you keep it in the garment bag

I had my dress for over a year in a garment bag in a dark closet. No issues.

That's great to know, thanks. I am fortunate enough to have plenty of dark closet space so I will probably just keep it there.

Keep it in a cool dark closet with some type of moisture absorber inside the closet (DamoRid or Arm n Hammer closet system) and you should be fine! And check on it every now and then.

Daughter stored her dress for a full year prior to the wedding. Keep it in the cloth bag it came in (absolutely NO plastic). Daughter's boutique also cautioned her to make sure she always used the hanging loops attached to the dress at the underarms and underneath the train to avoid putting stress on the dress' delicate straps. Our home is pretty dry, but agree with pp that if you live in a humid area, keep a moisture absorber in the closet the dress is stored in. Mostly for fun, daughter tried her dress on at least every 6-8 weeks, so that gave her the chance to be reassured it was doing just fine (and that she was maintaining her weight/measurements). If you have pets, be sure to keep the closet door closed tightly so they can't do anything bizarre to the dress. (There have been posts about dresses covered in dog/cat hair, getting peed on, etc.... Smiley sad )

After being stored in the garment bag, and then in alterations for about 6 weeks, daughter had to have her dress steamed and pressed, so you might want to plan/budget for that (I think daughter's was about $100 at a high-end dry cleaner; when she had it cleaned and preserved after the wedding, I believe that was $200-250....)

    Congrats!

I've had my dress stored in a garment bag in a closet at my parents house for about 2 years and it looks exactly like the day I bought

Depending on how heavy it is, you may want to lay it flat rather than hang it. Sometimes even the loops can end up pulling on the inside of the bodice and make little indents on the outside.

Make sure the garment bag is some kind of fabric that can breathe, not plastic, which can cause it to yellow over time.

Cool, dark spot and it should be fine. Also remember to use the interior hanging straps if it's going to hang, so you don't risk stretching out the fabric of the dress.
