How to pick someone to do a reading..

FMS, the barefoot wife!, on June 29, 2009 at 6:24 PM Posted in Planning 0 7

I was orginally going to ask my sister, but she has declined even soming to the wedding at all..so now who do I ask? I do have one friend that really wanted to be a BM, but she isn't (still haven't informed her of this) and two sister in laws...The one SIL I get along with great! The other..well..sometimes I really can't stand her..but the one I can't stand sometimes would be really upset if I didn't pick her

Ask the person you are closest to, hopefully it's the same person who is the most comfortable speaking in front of an audience.

No matter who you choose be sure to give them the text as soon as possible; this is the biggest "stage show" of your lives so your "supporting cast" should be given plenty of time to rehearse.

Recently I've seen a couple of weddings where the groom's father did a reading. It was lovely because this is one person who is usually forgotten altogether on the wedding day.

If the groom's dad isn't present, it's also nice to ask godparents or grandparents, if they are able.

Thanks! I am also wondering if it's okay to tell them they can pick what they want, as long as it's not religous & too lenghty?(we are having a civil ceremony)

If you trust them then it's okay...it's your wedding, you can do whatever you like Smiley smile I personally wouldn't trust anyone to choose something appropriate, but then again I am a MAJOR control freak, so it's totally up to you...but that is a lot of pressure for most people.

Your officiant can do the reading, too. A recent wedding had two readings, one by his aunt and one by her aunt, which was lovely. Any others I had by sisters, moms or close family begin well, but seem to get emotional quickly. You want someone that is comfortable doing public speaking and has a good voice to project or is mic'd.

Everything may have been said already, but as an officiant I would offer that whomever you select should have an excellent speaking voice and be comfortable speaking before large groups. In my opinion, your reader should not memorize the reading, but actually read it. As mentioned, give the reading to the reader well in advance, so (s)he may rehearse the piece.

I do not believe the reader should pick anything (s)he wishes. It is important to recognize that your officiant is setting the tone of your love as a couple and projecting this to your guests.

Therefore, the officiant should be asked to approve any reading. I have been offered readings where I had to say, "no." On occasion I might suggest that someone give such reading at the reception, just not at the ceremony.

You will definitely want your reader to be heard, thus a microphone ought be provided. I always recommend a wireless, remote mic, as these do not interfere with the pictures.

    My very best,

    Reverend Stan
