How to notify guests of open bar for beer/wine only?

GettingMarriedinMay, on April 26, 2017 at 11:45 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 60

We are having an open bar with beer and wine only (if guests want other liquor, they can purchase it using cash or CC). How do we notify guests of that?

My fiancé and I picked a venue with no liquor at all. We're also doing half and half with our bar. For dinner it'll be an open bar and after 8p it'll be a cash only bar. We're doing a cute sign next to the bar that says the prices for wine and beer.

We also were going to have our MC mention it as dinner ends that it's the last call for open bar Smiley smile

Maybe put a drink menu up with the wine and beer that is free.

I think that will get confusing fast, regardless if you notify guests.

A sign for what beer and wine is available will be fine. @FayH Please don't do half and half it's very confusing and rude, making a cute sign doesn't make it appropriate!

Fay, there is not such thing as a "cute" sign announcing prices of drinks your guests have to buy. A cash bar is never cute.

I would suggest not having liquor options available for purchase, and maybe adding a signature drink for your liquor drinking guests. My bar service will be open bar with domestic beer, wine, and a signature drink. Sure, they have the setup for other drinks to be made, but I would feel bad if one guest bought a jack and coke and then others wanted one but didn't have money. So, they will only be offering the drinks that are included.

Just stick to beer and wine only. Don't ask your guests to pay for anything.

This will seem rude. If you don't want to pay for liquor, don't have it as an option. Beer and wine only is perfectly acceptable.

Fay, your set-up is rude. If you host a wedding, you need to host an open bar for the duration of the cocktail hour and reception.

It's not OK to have guests subsidize the cost of your wedding. It would be better just to offer beer/wine and one signature mixed drink all night.

I'm going to be the UO. I personally don't like beer or wine and if you can't have a full open bar then I would prefer to have liquor available to me no matter if I have to pay for it or not.

I put my wedding menu on my wedding website along with something stating that beer, wine, and soft drinks would be served. My reception is at a restaurant so technically guests could go to an outside bar and purchase liquor drinks if they wanted. I'm not advertising or preventing this.

@Fay your "cute" sign isn't going to help- your guests will be confused and then pissed. Do not change from an open bar to cash. Guests should not have to open their wallets at your wedding.

It's a limited open bar. OP, as others have said, there is no reason to offer additional options for purchase. Just offer what you are paying for. It would great if you could add a signature drink or two.

Honestly that would piss me off. I've been to both cash bar weddings and open bar and I'm totally cool with either . I think it should be either or, not both. At755 I'd be making a mad dash to the bar to get my last drinks.

Don't notify them. Just put a drink menu by the bar with prices. You can write free by beer and wine and then the prices by the other items.

UO but I'd rather be able to pay for a drink that I want. I don't like beer or wine and am very picky and don't like a lot of liquors, so even a signature drink is likely I wouldn't like it. I'd much rather just be able to pay for what I want.
