How to mix two different themes?

lidy, on April 15, 2014 at 8:38 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 10

The color scheme for our wedding is Black and Gold, then it turned into a formal black tie Great Gatsby theme. However, my FH wants a lot of Star Wars to be incorporated. We got into a fight over this because all of his ideas were over the top ( like dressing up in Storm Trooper outfit and a Darth Vader wedding cake). the only reason we decided with the black and gold is because my FH hates all the colors of the rainbow. ( I wanted pastels colors for the summer wedding).

So far the only things i can think of is having the guys wear Star Wars cufflinks, name the tables after the planets, do a Star Wars candy buffet.

We're doing an Old Hollywood themed wedding (black/gold and red roses) with art deco (Gatsbyish) era stuff. I have no idea how I would include star wars stuff into my theme and yours sounds very similar. If you're going for formal/classy rather than campy/silly - I honestly don't know how it could be done.

What if you did a Star Wars theme for your rehearsal dinner or a shower or something else wedding related?

Maybe just a small nod to star wars like an entrance song or maybe the cake topper. But there is really no way I can think of the seamlessly mesh these two themes.

What about a Star Wars grooms cake, cufflinks and using some of the music. Those are hard themes to combine and it still look formal black tie so it will have to be small nods. I had to combine western with butterflies.

I did ask him about doing this with just the guys on their own time..but he is determined to throw Star Wars in the mix. He even contacted our baker about putting Storm Trooper legos all over the cake...i didnt even know about it until my baker emailed me a sketch of our wedding cake. im fine with a cute cake topper...but legos, no.

We're doing nightmare before Xmas, but our cake will still have the R2D2(with veil and flower) and darth vader cake topper I originally made.

When we were just using Star Wars themes, our original officiant was going to dress up as vader lol. The guys were going to have Star Wars cufflinks, socks and ties.

Have the cake or grooms cake be star wars, have the favors be star wars themed or have a quote printed on the favors thats from starwars, have your thank you cards be you two dressed as star wars characters, have stamps printed thats you two dressed as star wars characters, if your cake or grooms cake is a star wars cake you can play the theme song while you cut it. Or you can hire entertainment to have a light saber fight as a surprise during the meal if you want to go all out. Its important to not go overboard but just have subtle details around, this isnt a kids bday party, if he really wants to immerse himself, take him to a convention for his bday

I think it can work if done classy. Star wars has a lot of gold, black, white, and silver as far as colours go which should be easy to slip in with yours. I like cake toppers that lidy posted. I like the idea of doing the cufflinks and all that. Is there a way you could slip it into any print media? We are creating our custom damask (FH is a graphic designer) and slipping our little geeky elements in there. We don`t want to confuse grandma but we also want to make sure our personality shines through so we are finding all the little subtle ways. Sillouttes. If you wanted to name the tables in addition to or instead of table numbers you could use planets for the Star Wars universe. If you are cutting a cake see if you can find a knife that has a lightsaber handle. A subtle detail most people would miss but I bet your FH would love!

You could theme your invites, programs, or other paper items as Star Wars.
